North Carolina A&T State Has Strong Opening Day at NCAA East Prelims

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --
North Carolina A&T State's Brandon Hicklin is heading to Eugene.

Hicklin qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the men's long jump on Wednesday, turning in the ninth-best mark in the field at a season- and MEAC-best 7.61 meters (24 feet, 11.75 inches).

Trevor Stewart and Randolph Ross posted the two fastest times in the men's 400 meters, with Stewart running a 44.55 and Ross running a 44.63 to advance to Friday's quarterfinal heats. Elijah Young also qualified for the next round with a 46.64.

Abbas Abbkar ran a 1:49.05 to move on the 800-meter quarterfinals and Akeem Lindo qualified for the next round in the 400-meter hurdles after running a 50.86.

Cory Poole (13.64) and Cedric McGriff (13.79) advanced to the next round of the men's 110-meter hurdles in the East Preliminary, while Javonte Harding moved to Friday's quarterfinal in the 100 meters with a 10.19.

Harding also qualified for the next round in the 200 meters, posting the third-fastest time with a 20.32.

Daniel Stokes ran a 20.85 to move on to the 200-meter quarterfinals.

Coppin's Amoah Wins Heats in 100, 200 Meters

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- 
Coppin State's Joseph Amoah won his heats of the 100- and 200-meter dash in the first round of the NCAA Track & Field East Preliminaries on Wednesday night at University of North Florida's Hodges Stadium to qualify for Friday's quarterfinals.
 
A senior from Greater Accra, Ghana, Amoah took first in his section of the 100 meters in 10.11, besting what was arguably the most competitive heat of Wednesday's first round.

Amoah also clocked a 20.36 to win his section of the 200 meters, equaling his fastest time of the season in the event.
 
Amoah will be the fourth seed in both events of the quarterfinals on Friday, with the 100 meters set for 7:05 p.m., followed by the 200 meters dash at 8:10 p.m. The top 12 finishers in both events will advance to the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Ore., on June 9-12.

Spartans' Barnes Advances at NCAA East Prelim

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- 
Norfolk State senior Trequan Barnes finished 15th out of 48 runners Wednesday in the 400-meter heats at the NCAA East Preliminary meet at the University of North Florida, earning a spot in Friday's quarterfinal races.

Barnes clocked a time of 46.38 seconds, finishing third in his heat to earn an automatic spot in Friday's races. The 46.38 is his second-best time of the outdoor season.

The top 12 finishers in Friday's races will earn berths to the NCAA Outdoor Championships next month at Oregon. Barnes is seeking his first outdoor national berth.

FAMU's Scott Advances at NCAA East Prelim

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- 
The first round is in his rearview mirror, and Florida A&M's Jaylyn Scott will continue his journey through the NCAA East Preliminary Track & Field Championships.

The junior made his postseason debut Wednesday, where he clocked the second-best time in his 400-meter hurdles heat in 51.20. The top three automatically qualified for quarterfinals, and his mark stood 13th overall in a 47-man field. 

Scott's next race is Friday at 7:55 p.m. The top 12 times will punch a ticket to Eugene, Ore., for the NCAA Track & Field Championships.

NCCU's Green Advances at NCAA East Prelim

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --
Earl Green of North Carolina Central turned in a strong performance on Wednesday at the NCAA East Preliminary hosted by the University of North Florida, advancing to the next round in the men's 400-meter hurdles.

Green ran a 50.58, the third-fastest time (and the fastest time in the MEAC this season), to advance to Friday's quarterfinal heats with a chance to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Ore. next month.

Howard's Davis, Tawiah Come Up Short in NCAA East Prelim

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- 
Howard University's Kameron Davis and Casimir Tawiah came up short at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor East Preliminary Round in Jacksonville, Fla., on the campus of the University of North Florida.
 
Both Bison competed in the 110-meter hurdles where they finished 28th and 35th, respectively.
 
Davis posted a new personal best (13.95), but fell just below the qualifying mark of 13.91. The Miami, Fla., native ended his year with a pair of medals at the 2021 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Championships, placing second in the 110-meter hurdles while guiding the 4x400 relay squad to a third-place finish.
 
Tawiah ran the same heat with Davis, recording a 14.13 time.
