Howard's Effiom Breaks School Record at Navy Invite

ANNAPOLIS, Md. / CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- 
Howard University senior thrower Diana Effiom opened the new indoor season with a statement, setting a new school benchmark at the Navy Invitational, hosted by Navy.
 
The Dallas native shattered her own record in the weight throw, tossing over 56 feet (17.11 meters). The previous mark was 16.32 meters (53'3"), set in January 2020.
 
Although Effiom had huge success in Maryland, the Bison found most of its success at the Ivy & HBCU Challenge, hosted by Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass.

Hornets Shine at FastTrack Season Opener

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- 
The Delaware State University track & field teams competed at the FastTrack Season Opener held at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.

In all, the Hornets racked up nine event wins and 19 top-three performances.

Grant, Walker, Cheruiyot Each Win at KMS Opener

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- 
Je'Shawn Walker and Evans Cheruiyot posted wins for the Norfolk State men's track and field team as the Spartans opened the 2021-22 indoor season at the KMS Opener at the Virginia Beach Sports Center on Sunday.

Walker won the mile in a time of 4 minutes, 29.64 seconds. Cheruiyot, meanwhile, led a 1-2-3 sweep of the 3,000 meters.

For the women, Kara Grant outkicked teammate Fridah Koech to win the 3,000 meters with a winning time of 10 minutes, 49.51 seconds to win the 3K.

Morgan State Gets Off to Solid Start in Annapolis

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- 
The Morgan State men's indoor track & field team got off to a good start on Saturday at the Navy Invitational I, as the Bears took to the oval for the first time this season.

Morgan finished the day with 10 top-5 finishes and placed first in four events at Wesley A. Brown Field House. The Bears also finished the day with five IC4A qualifiers.

NCCU Shines at Season-Opening WSSU College Kickoff

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- 
After a 644-day layoff, the North Carolina Central track & field teams returned to indoor action in impressive fashion, earning a combined 22 top-10 finishes at the Visit Winston-Salem College Kickoff, hosted by the JDL Fast Track over the weekend.
 
The NCCU women's distance performers were led by freshman Victoria Swepson, who finished the women's 1000-meter race in 3 minutes and six seconds to place second, and was joined by classmate Elan Booker, who finished fifth in the event with a time of 3:18.46.

Swepson also placed ninth in the 3,000-meter run after she finished in 11:12.23.
 
For the men's distance crew, seniors Juan rodriguez, Joshua McLean and Mackenson Yrelus were joined by junior Isaiah Hunter to bring home first place in the men's distance medley with a combined time of 11:17.09. Hunter and Yrelus, alongside seniors Gordon Lewis and Earl Green, finished third in the 4x400-meter relay with a fused time of 3:23.27.

Coppin Opens Season in Bill Ward Invite

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- 
Three Eagles from the Coppin State indoor track & field team competed in their respective events Saturday evening at the Bill Ward Invitational at the Ocean Breeze Complex in New York.
 
Jeff Hammond led the way capturing second place in the long jump with a mark of 7.07 meters (23-02.25). He also ran a time of 6.92 to capture fourth in the 60-meter dash.
 
On the women's side, Erin Palmer finished in third place in the 60-meter hurdles with a 9.15. Freshman Oliva Wright finished in 12th with a time 10.09.

Wright also came in fifth place in the triple jump (10.69m, 35-00.75).
