NCAT Men Break 4x400 Record, Earns No. 1 Ranking

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- 
North Carolina A&T State understands without a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track & Field Championship this season, there is no time to waste when it comes to qualifying for the NCAA Indoor Championships in March. 

Therefore, their times on Saturday were superb at the Carolina Challenge hosted by the University of South Carolina at the Indoor Track and Field Complex. N.C. A&T secured wins in men's 60 meters, the men's 200 meters, the men's 4x400-meter relay, the women's 400 meters and the men's 60-meter hurdles. 

 The Aggies also broke two facility records, with one of those broken records shared by two Aggies. N.C. A&T now has 14 first-place finishes in their first two meets of the season.

Barnes, Pride Shine for Spartans at Liberty Elite Invitational

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- 
Trequan Barnes broke his own school record in the 500-meter dash Saturday as the Spartans wrapped up their second meet of the indoor season at the Liberty Elite Invitational. Barnes clocked a time of 1:02.82 in his second-place finish.

He trailed only post-collegiate athlete Alejandro Zapata, who ran a world-leading time of 1:00.66.

On the women's side, Malika Pride took second in the 200- and 500-meter events and was the top collegiate finisher in both races. Pride won her heat in the 200 on Friday in 24.39 seconds. On Saturday, she clocked a time of 1:15.40 in her second-place finish in the 500 meters.

In both races, she trailed only a post-collegiate/unattached athlete at the top of the standings.

Coppin's Manu, Opuni Sweep Sprints at VMI

LEXINGTON, Va. -- 
Joseph Manu won both the 60- and 200-meter dash, while Abayie Opuni took the 400-meter dash as Coppin State's men's track & field team opened its season at the VMI Team Challenge at Cormack Field House on Saturday afternoon.
 
Manu crossed first in the 60 meters in a time of 6.80 after clocking a 6.82 in the preliminaries earlier in the day. Manu doubled up to take gold in the 200 meters in 21.34, blowing out the next closest competitor by over half a second.
 
Opuni won the 400 in 48.09, outkicking the second-place finisher by nearly two full seconds.

Making her Coppin State debut, Shenelle Tomlinson won the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.55 and led the 4x400-meter relay team to victory in 3:51.96.

Hornets' Guy Wins 800 Meters in Collegiate Debut

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- 
Delaware State's Nathanael Guy took first place in the 800-meter run, while Tre Johnson was tops among collegiate competitors in the triple jump to highlight the performances of the Hornet men at the season-opening 2021 Liberty Elite Invitational on Saturday.

Kyra Lyles took second place in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 58.24 seconds in her debut collegiate quarter-mile, while Blair Daniel was ninth among college runners at 1:00.31 in the 400.
