Delaware State Senior Spotlight: Gerald Amobi

Where were you when the news dropped about all sports being canceled for the rest of the year?

I was in Miami on spring break.

What was your initial reaction to the news?

I was disappointed because it was my last outdoor season of my collegiate career.

When you left for spring break it was right before the shutdown. Were there fears back then about the chance of not being able to return to campus?

At first, I didn't think it was going to be a big deal. There were no fears, but I still needed to go to campus to get my remaining items.

As one of the seniors on the squad did you address the entire team afterwards?

I reached out to a number of my teammates and told them to try to remain in shape right now as if it was the regular season as much as possible. You don't know what the future may hold.

Any concerns about the possibility of not being able to finish your classes this semester?

No not for me personally, but I do feel for the ones who were affected by this in any way.

How are you able to stay focused on your studies during such a stressful time?

I balance it by working out as a stress reliever and try to do my work at night when not too many things are going on at once.

With the possibility of not having a traditional graduation, how will you celebrate getting your bachelor's degree?

Just being around my family is cool for now. I'll catch up with my friends later.

What have you been doing to pass the time during self-quarantine?

I've been sleeping, doing homework, and working out.

Has any of your family or friends contracted the coronavirus?

No and I thank God for that.

The NCAA has given all spring athletes an extra semester of eligibility, is that something you will take advantage of?

If it works in my favor, then most definitely.

If this is the end of Gerald Amobi's collegiate career, he'll leave with 11 first-place finishes and 21 other top-three finishes as a member of the indoor/outdoor track team.
