Delaware State Senior Spotlight: DeVonte Doward

Where were you when the news dropped about all sports being canceled for the rest of the year?
I was in Miami, Fla., when I heard about the news. I had just got finished working out that morning around 11 a.m. and I got a call from my coach.

Once coach broke the news to you, how did you feel? What was your initial reaction?
My initial reaction was like a what the world type reaction. I felt down about at first because I can't finish my season out and it was like all the work I done was basically a waste or at least it felt like that. I was really looking for this outdoor season because I felt like I was in the best shape that I been in since I been at Delaware state. The new coaching staff and the energy on the team was really flowing.

As one of the seniors on the squad, did you address the entire team afterwards?
No, but I'm planning on it after my classes are over.

What message do you wish to convey to your teammates?
To take advantage of the time you have now left in college whether if you decide to go pro or not. Cherish those moments and take those lesson you learn in sports such as self-discipline and being consistent to the real world after you graduate.

Do you believe that you took full advantage of your time here and what moments will you cherish the most?
Yes, I believe I took full advantage of my time here. I think I have learned a lot about myself and growing as person not only to make myself better but the people around me to. The moments I will cherish the most is the time we had practice and a couple of our team bonding events.

What do you miss the most with the season being taken away so abruptly?
I'm going to miss my team because there was some many personality on the squad.

The NCAA has given all spring athletes an extra semester of eligibility, is that something you will take advantage of?
I'm thinking about it but I'm not sure yet.

Have you spoken to any of the other seniors on the team about possibly returning?
Yeah, but we don't know what the future (may) hold.

When you left for spring break it was right before the shutdown. Were there fears back then about the chance of not being able to return to campus?
Yea, a little bit but I live off campus.

How can this young team still develop despite the season being cut short? And what role do you play/if any in helping them grow as student-athletes?
I feel like despite having the season cut, I feel like this is a time for them to work on themselves. Eating right, healing up your body, and furthering your faith. Sometimes we emphasized the big picture without taking care of the little things. And my role would be just giving me advice and telling them about my experience of what I learn.

What are some lessons that you learned throughout your collegiate career?
Time management and taking the extra step, such doing the necessary things on your free time and being like sponge. Soaking in good information.

How are you able to stay focused on your studies during such a stressful time?
Basically, making sure I graduate.

Any concerns about the possibility of not being able to finish your classes this semester?
It's cool; nope, I didn't have any concern.

Obviously, you guys won't have a traditional graduation ceremony, but how will you celebrate getting your bachelor's degree?
I was going to on a cruise, but that's not happening anymore, but I don't know yet.

Can you give DSU some parting words just in case you decide to not return next season?
I would like to thank all of my coaches and teammates. They have helped me to become the man I am today, whether it was from a one on one encounter or learning from them from a distance. I wish the best for all athletes at DSU. Continue to work out and always put yourself in a position where you gain or learn. Also, create opportunities for yourself because we won't be in college forever.
