Where were you when the news dropped about all sports being canceled for the rest of the year?
Amber Conyers: I believe I was in New Orleans for my birthday.
What was your initial reaction to the news?
AC: I was disappointed. Somewhat heartbroken because I was on such a high note going into the outdoor season. I felt like I had so much to prove and I was ready for it and it hurt for it to be taken away.
Did any of the senior's or coaches address the team afterwards?
AC: Coach Kimes gave us encouragement and told us to keep working out but the team didn't really get into it too much because we were all hurt about the news.
The NCAA has given all spring athletes an extra semester of eligibility, is that something you will take advantage of?
AC: Yes. I plan to do grad school here at DSU. I already had an extra semester (of eligibility) for outdoor so this extra semester will be great too.
Any concerns about the possibility of not being able to finish your classes this semester?
AC: No not really, I'm pushing to finish the semester strong being that I got a 4.0 last semester. I will say some of my professors are making it hard to do so but I'm pushing through it.
With the possibility of not having a traditional graduation, how will you celebrate getting your bachelor's degree?
AC: I have no idea honestly. I was supposed to go on a trip to Cancun but that was cancelled. I think I just might have a big cookout with family and friends when this pandemic is over.
What have you been doing to pass the time during the self-quarantine period?
AC: I Facetime my sisters like everyday and Facetime my friends. But I've had paper after paper during this quarantine so I've been working most of the time.
How are you able to say so focused on your studies during such a stressful time?
AC: It's been hard. I just try to motivate myself by remembering I'm at the finish line. My friends and I continuously push each other to finish strong.
Has any of your family or friends contracted the coronavirus?
AC: My father's aunts passed away from COVID about 3 weeks ago. Those are the only family members I know that have contracted it.
I am so sorry to hear that.
AC: Thank you. I appreciate it.
Changing gears to something more positive what are some goals do you and the rest of the team plan on accomplishing next season?
AC: Well, I know that we are looking to score so much more on the women's and men's sides. For myself, I am planning to jump six meters within the first couple of track meets we have. I just think our main goal is to level up and to show everyone DSU is here and we can compete at a high level.
Amber Conyers will enter next season with seven first-place finishes and 16 other top-three finishes so far in her career. Conyers set a career-best 11.67 meters in the triple jump at the Villanova Invitational (Feb. 1, 2020). During her sophomore year, she set her career high in the high jump at 5.70 meters at the Penn Relays (April. 26, 2018).
