Women's Track & Field

Delaware State Senior Spotlight: Sierra Cruz

Where were you when the news dropped about all sports being canceled for the rest of the year?

I was sitting in my room at home in New Castle, DE when we were all in the DSU T&F group chat talking about how NCAA indoors was canceled, then next thing you know it touched an HBCU. Lincoln canceled their sports and then, I saw my friend who runs at Morgan State that their season was canceled. So we're all like "it's touching the MEAC" we didn't think NCAA would pull the plug on all the sports as a whole man, but once they released the statement It was like a ripple effect and I think it's crazy because before NCAA said something one of my favorite track meets was canceled Penn relays.

What was you initial feeling once the season was cancelled?

I felt like someone just slapped my 'after the (track) meet' meal on the ground they literally took away everything away. This is something a senior can't and will never get back, this was my only outdoor season, my last chance running Track and Field for the rest of my life.
People say "their giving back your season" but people forget we're student-athletes not just an athlete I don't have any more credit hours to stay a whole semester. As for me I took track for granted and I'm so sorry I ever did.

Did anyone from the coaching staff or any team leaders speak to everyone after the cancellation?

Yea the head coach reached out updating us about information we need and to keep working out and stuff.

Are you concerned about the possibility of not being able to finish your classes this semester?

Honestly yes! I can't learn Chemistry and Trigonometry through a computer! I have a test in trig and I don't know what we're doing. I already was feeling lost (in my classes) so this is just making everything hard and with (thoughts of) the virus playing in the back end of my mind. It's hard to keep up with your school work especially if it's not straight forward school work your dealing with. They should've taken tests away or something to compensate us. Also if I do bad it's going to effect my GPA.

With the possibility of having a traditional graduation ceremony dwindling, how will you personally celebrate receiving your degree?

I graduate in December so I'm happy I don't have to go through any of that sorry to say.

Once you do graduate what are some career goals you plan on accomplishing?

I am going to graduate school at Temple but I'm aiming to go to school as a grad assistant for athletic training. After I get my masters, I want to start my career off at a college. I love sports so being around them for the rest of my life is a goal of mine and my end goal is to work with professional athletes in the NBA, NFL or Olympic/professional track athletes.

Has any of your family or friends contracted the coronavirus?

No! Thank God! We wear masks when we go to stores wash our hands when we come back inside and stay in the house. My mom works in the health care field so she was very scared about contracting it so I hope she stays safe when she goes back to work.

Since it seems like you will not be using your extra semester of eligibility can you say some parting words for the track team and the University as a whole?

I thank every single coach on the coaching staff because every coach helped me to be who I am.  Former assistant coach Jones for accepting me into the track program. Coach Harris for believing in me and knowing that I would get better, she never gave up on me and that's big, my last two years at a PWI in Indiana my coach wasn't supportive and never made me feel like I was good at anything in track, but coach Harris did! Coach Shields for seeing my potential when people didn't, and coach was always cheering for me. Coach Terry for helping me with hurdles and sprints & making me laugh. Coach Kimes for being a motivator and keeping me hungry for more, and last Coach Henry for being my biggest motivator, he's a special part of why I was on the road to becoming great, he was the good the bad and the ugly behind track and I was scared for my life everyday but I knew he came with great intentions and I'm going to miss him. If Never met him I don't know how my indoor (season) would've went. I wish I had years with him, not just a semester.

DSU is such an illustrious institution I met my best friends, made so many great memories on and off the track and it brought me out my shell a little bit. It's a place that brings the best out of you!

I love my HBCU and the MEAC better watch out DSU is coming. For my teammate STAY DANGEROUS! they don't need a speech they know what's up.
