NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 6, 2020--The grind of the 2019-20 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) indoor track & field season continues this week with seven schools in action.
The 2020 MEAC Indoor Championships are just weeks away, as they’ll be held Feb. 27-29 at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
On Friday and Saturday, Maryland Eastern Shore and Howard will participate in the South Carolina Invitational. North Carolina Central and North Carolina A&T State will both run in the Camel City Invitational.
Coppin State will travel north to compete in the Albany Invitational, and select Aggies will also participate in the Virginia Tech Elite.
Norfolk State will compete in the VMI Winter Relays.
Saturday will see Delaware State will run in the Frank Colden Invitational.
This past weekend saw several standout performances; North Carolina A&T State freshman Randolph Ross again set the world’s best time in the men’s 400 meters, running a 45.44 at the Texas Tech Invitational (a time that was converted to 45.55 for altitude), earning MEAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this season.
Ross was also part of the Aggies’ 4x400-meter relay squad that now ranks second nationally with a converted time of 3:05.22. NCAT’s ‘B’ squad ranks third in the nation with a 3:06.06.
Norfolk State’s Kiara Grant is ranked in the top 10 in Div. I in two events after this past weekend. She won both the 60 meters and 200 meters at the Penn State National Open, earning MEAC Women’s Track Athlete of the Week honors. Her 7.20 in the 60 meters is seventh nationally, and she’s eighth in the 200 meters at 23.25.
Maryland Eastern Shore’s Tamunoibi Dabipi was named MEAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Week for his performance this past weekend in the shot put, while Morgan State’s Diamond Moore had a standout performance in the pentathlon en route to taking MEAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honors.
Other nationally-ranked MEAC student-athletes include NCAT’s Cambrea Sturgis, who is second in the women’s 60 meters (7.15) and fifth in the 200 meters (an altitude-converted 23.17); Coppin State’s Joseph Amoah, who ranks third in the men’s 200 meters (20.75); and the Aggies’ Trevor Stewart, who is tied for seventh in the men’s 400 meters (an altitude-converted 46.94).
NCAT’s Madeleine Akobundu is sixth nationally in the women’s 60-meter hurdles (8.08), and her teammate Paula Salmon is tied for seventh (8.09). Martha Bissah of Norfolk State is eighth in the women’s 800 meters after running a 2:05.38 this past weekend.
After this past weekend, the Aggies are ranked No. 12 in the nation in the men’s poll by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) and No. 29 in the women’s poll.
