MEAC Announces Weekly Track & Field Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 19, 2020North Carolina A&T State sophomore Regan Kimtai was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced today, while North Carolina A&T State sophomore Cambrea Sturgis was selected as Women’s Track Athlete of the Week. North Carolina A&T State junion Aaron Wilkerson was named Men’s Field Athlete of the Week, while Bethune-Cookman junior Monae Nichols was named Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.
 
Kimtai (So., Eldoret, Kenya) set the MEAC’s fastest time in the men’s 5,000 meters this past weekend in the Tyson Invitational, running a 14:55.31 to finish fifth in the race. He is one of only two runners in the conference to break the 15-minute mark in the event.
 
Sturgis (So., Kannapolis, N.C.) won the 60 meters and finished second in the 200 meters at the Tyson Invitational this past weekend. Already one of the nation’s best sprinters, Sturgis turned in a 7.17 in the 60 meters and bested her time in the 200 meters with a 23.02 – which is currently the seventh-fastest time in the nation.
 
Wilkerson (Jr., Greensboro, N.C.) set new MEAC bests in both the shot put and the weight throw at the Tyson Invitational this past weekend. He eclipsed the 17-meter mark in the shot put (17.01 meters), and he tossed the weight 18.20 meters – becoming the only MEAC athlete in that event with a distance of at least 18 meters.
 
Nichols (Jr., Lakeland, Fla.) is ranked 16th in the nation in the long jump after leaping 6.25 meters as part of the pentathlon at the Queen City Multis early last week. The long jump was one of two events that Nichols won in the competition.
 
Other Top Performers
JaQuaveon Beachem (B-CU) was seventh in the heptathlon at the Queen City Multis.
 
Joseph Amoah (CSU) ran a 6.78 to win the 60 meters at the VMI Indoor Classic.
 
Alanna Newby (CSU) was 10th in the shot put at VMI with a mark of 12.65 meters.
 
Tatiana Ogundeko (CSU) won the 800 meters at VMI, running a 2:12.59, while also anchoring the 4x400 team to a second-place finish.
 
Michael Scott (CSU) was seventh in the men’s long jump at VMI.
 
Tre’ Johnson (DSU) leapt 14.62 meters to win the triple jump at the Fastrack National Invitational.
 
Sylvia Okafor (DSU) won the 400 meters at the Fastrack National with a time of 59.06.
 
Ja’Tae Joyner (HOW) was second in the long jump at the Darius Dixon Memorial with a mark of 5.83 meters.
 
Bhrandi Crenshaw (NCCU) leapt 12.52 meters to win the triple jump at the Darius Dixon Memorial.
 
Marvin Jones (NCCU) won the high jump with a personal-best mark of 2.10 meters at the Darius Dixon Memorial.
 
Kiara Grant (NSU) won both the 60 meters (7.30) and 200 meters (23.77) at the Darius Dixon Memorial.
 
Kyle Nottage (UMES) reached MEAC qualification in both the shot put (14.94 meters) and the weight throw (15.63 meters).
 
Johnathan Robertson (UMES) came in second in the 800 meters with a 1:54.96 at Monmouth.
 
Jessica Roney (UMES) won the 60-meter hurdles at Monmouth.
