MEAC Track & Field: Time Running Out Before Indoor Championships

NORFOLK, Va., Feb. 13, 2020--
There are just two weeks until the 2020 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships, and this coming weekend is the last weekend of competition for the bulk of the league’s teams.
 
North Carolina A&T State will get the weekend started at the Don Kirby Elite Invite, while Delaware State will run in the Fast Track National starting on Thursday.
 
On Friday, South Carolina State, North Carolina Central, North Carolina A&T State, Norfolk State and Howard will run in the Darius Dixon Memorial Invite, hosted by Liberty.
 
Delaware State will also head north to participate in Boston University’s David Hemery Valentine Invite this weekend. Coppin State will participate in the VMI Indoor Classic, while Howard and Norfolk State will continue with the Darius Dixon Invitational on Saturday.
 
Bethune-Cookman will conclude the weekend at the KMS Invite 2 in Birmingham on Sunday.
 
North Carolina Central swept the men’s weekly honors, with Gordon Lewis being named Track Athlete of the Week and Marvin Jones taking Field Athlete of the Week honors. On the women’s side, North Carolina A&T State’s Cambrea Sturgis and Delaware State’s Precious Igwebuike earned the Track and Field Athlete of the Week awards, respectively.
 
The Aggie men are ranked No. 12 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) rankings, while the women are 26th. The Norfolk State women are also among the top 50 teams in the nation, sitting at No. 32.
 
NCAT freshman Randolph Ross continues to lead the nation in the men’s 400 meters after the time he ran at Texas Tech two weekends ago, which converted to 45.55 because of altitude. Ross is also 22nd nationally in the 200 meters at 21.04.
 
Other Aggies nationally ranked include Jaylan Mitchell, who is third in the men’s 60 meters (6.59, converted for altitude); Trevor Stewart, who is on the Bowerman Watch List and sits tied for 11th in the 400 meters (46.54, converted for altitude); Akeem Sirleaf, who is third in the 200 meters (20.75); and the men’s 4x400-meter relay squads, which sit second (3:05.22, converted for altitude) and third (3:06.06).
 
For the women, the Aggies boast Sturgis, who is second in the 60 meters (7.15) and tied for fourth in the 200 meters (23.06); Madeleine Akobundu, who is sixth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.08); Paula Salmon, who is tied for seventh in the 60-meter hurdles (8.09); Ty’Jerica Robinson, who is 17th in the 60-meter hurdles (8.21); the 4x400 squad, which is 18th (3:36.72); Tori Ray, who is 20th in the 400 meters (53.62); and Kamaya Debose-Epps, who is 21st in the 200 meters (23.53).
 
Other MEAC student-athletes nationally ranked include Coppin State’s Joseph Amoah, who is third in the men’s 200 meters (20.75); Norfolk State’s Kiara Grant, who ranks seventh in the women’s 60 meters (7.20) and ninth in the women’s 200 meters (23.25); Norfolk State’s Martha Bissah, who is eighth in the 800 meters (2:05.38); Bethune-Cookman’s Monae Nichols, who is tied for 12th in the women’s long jump (6.25 meters); and Bethune-Cookman’s Jordan Williams, who ranks 22nd in the 400 meters (46.94).
