NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 8, 2020--Ten Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) programs will be in action to kick off week three of the 2019-20 track & field season, which marks the first full week of the new decade.
On Friday, Bethune-Cookman and South Carolina State will participate in the UAB Blazer Invitational in Birmingham, Ala. Coppin State, Delaware State and Morgan State will run in the HBCU Battle in New York, while North Carolina A&T State will participate in the Jim Green Invitational hosted by Kentucky.
Howard will be at the first day of the Virginia Tech Invitational.
Saturday’s slate will see Florida A&M at the Orange and Purple Elite hosted by Clemson. Maryland Eastern Shore and Norfolk State will run in the Great Dane Invitational hosted by Albany.
This past weekend saw Howard and Norfolk State compete in the Father Diamond Invitational hosted by George Mason, and there were a number of strong individual performances in that meet.
Howard took home the Track Athlete of the Week honors, with Darian Clyburn honored on the men’s side and Ameenah Saalih on the women’s side. Norfolk State took home the Men’s Field Athlete of the Week award (Anthony Giacchetta) and the Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honor (Arieana Parker).
Heading into the coming weekend, several MEAC student-athletes are among the top 25 in all of Div. I in their respective events. Morgan State’s Infinnatie Rowe highlights that group, leading the nation in the women’s 800 meters at a 2:11.60.
Also nationally ranked for Morgan State are Keon Rantin (sixth) and Brandon James (eighth) in the men’s 400 meters and Kobe-Jordan Rhooms (tied for 14
th) in the men’s high jump.
Bethune-Cookman is well represented in the national rankings – highlighted by Monae Nichols being tied for eighth in the women’s long jump (6.08 meters) and Kelton Williams also tied for eighth in the men’s high jump (2.15 meters).
Marc McCoy is ninth in the men’s triple jump (15.09 meters), and Carlin Berryhill is 18
th in the nation in the mile run. Jai’Quan Earls is ranked in two events: tied for 20
th in the men’s long jump (7.22 meters) and 24
th in the triple jump (14.54 meters).
Thea Shaw is tied for 17
th in the women’s high jump (1.70 meters).
Saalih is tied for 24
th in the nation in the women’s 60 meters after this past weekend, and Clyburn is also tied for 24
th in the men’s 60-meter hurdles. Howard is also sixth in all of Div. I in the women’s distance medley relay.
In the men’s distance medley, Maryland Eastern Shore ranks sixth and Delaware State is eighth.
Martha Bissah of Norfolk State, the three-time reigning MEAC women’s cross country champion, is second in the nation in the mile run after this past weekend with a converted 4:45.84, and she is seventh at 3,000 meters.
The Norfolk State women are 21
st nationally in the 4x400-meter relay with a converted 3:48.28.
The Spartan men have two student-athletes ranked nationally in the 200 meters: Kai Cole is 13
th and Keith Brown is tied for 19
th.
North Carolina Central’s Brandhi Crenshaw is tied for 12
th in the women’s triple jump (12.31 meters), and Jahlanhnee Watkins of Maryland Eastern Shore is tied for 25
th in the men’s long jump (7.19 meters).
The Florida A&M men are 25
th in the nation in the 4x400-meter relay.
