NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 23, 2020--Nine of the 11 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) track & field programs will be in action this weekend for week four of the 2020 portion of the indoor track & field season, signaling one month from the MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships.
That event will be held Feb. 27-29 at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
On Friday, Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State and North Carolina Central will participate in the Liberty Flames Kickoff. North Carolina A&T State will run Virginia Tech’s Hokie Invite and Coppin State will be at the Rod McCravy Invite hosted by the University of Kentucky.
Saturday will see Delaware State participate in the Ursinus Collegeville Classic, while Norfolk State will be in the VMI Team Challenge.
Bethune-Cookman and Florida A&M will run in the KMS Invite 1 to cap off the weekend on Sunday.
Bethune Cookman’s Jordan Williams and Norfolk State’s Martha Bissah were named MEAC Track Athletes of the Week for their respective performances this past weekend. North Carolina A&T State was well-represented in the Field Athlete of the Week awards, with Brandon Hicklin claiming the men’s award and Sandra Brown sharing the women’s award with North Carolina Central’s Corneisha Mitchell.
North Carolina A&T State’s Trevor Stewart, who was runner-up in the 400 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in 2019, has been named to the Preseason Watch List for the Bowerman, the most prestigious award in collegiate track & field.
Heading into this weekend, four MEAC student-athletes lead the nation in their respective events: the Aggies’ Randolph Ross is the top men’s 400-meter runner with the 45.85 he ran two weekends ago, and North Carolina A&T State has the top men’s 4x400-meter relay time at 3:06.06.
On the women’s side, North Carolina A&T State’s Cambrea Sturgis is at the top of the heap in the 60 meters with a 7.15, and Norfolk State’s Kiara Grant leads the way in the 200 meters with the 23.25 she turned in two weekends ago.
Grant is also fifth in the nation in the 60 meters after running a 7.22 this past weekend.
Williams is fourth in the nation in the men’s 400 meters, thanks to the 46.94 he ran in Columbia, S.C. this past weekend. He is one of only two MEAC runners to break the 47-second mark in that distance so far this season.
Jaylan Mitchell of North Carolina A&T State is tied for third in the men’s 60 meters (6.61), and the Aggies are also seventh in the nation in the men’s distance medley, having run a 10:00.80 earlier this season.
Bissah is nationally ranked in two different events, sitting second in the women’s 800 meters – she ran a 2:05.68 this past weekend, and she is sixth in the mile.
The Aggies have a pair of runners in the top five nationally in the women’s 60-meter hurdles; Paula Salmon is third with an 8.09, and Madeleine Akobundu is right behind her in fourth with her season best of 8.10.
