MEAC Announces Weekly Track & Field Honors

NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 22, 2020Bethune-Cookman senior Jordan Williams was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced today, while Norfolk State senior Martha Bissah was selected as Women’s Track Athlete of the Week. North Carolina A&T State sophomore Brandon Hicklin earned Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors, while North Carolina A&T State senior Sandra Brown and North Carolina Central senior Corneisha Mitchell were named Women’s Field Co-Athletes of the Week.
 
Williams (Sr., Saint Petersburg, Fla.) posted the nation’s fourth-fastest time in the 400 meters this past weekend at the Gamecock Opener. He ran a 46.94, which is second in the MEAC, to finish third in the race. Williams is one of only two athletes in the conference to post a sub-47 second time in the 400 meters so far this season.
 
Bissah (Sr., Accra, Ghana) leads the MEAC and is second in the nation in the 800 meters after this past weekend, where she ran a 2:05.68 in the Gamecock Opener. She leads the conference in the event by just over six full seconds, and she was also on the 4x400-meter relay team that posted the MEAC’s second-fastest time this season with a 3:44.06.
 
Hicklin (So., Spartanburg, S.C.) leaped 7.51 meters (24 feet, 7.75 inches) to finish second in the long jump this past weekend at the Gamecock Opener. He has the best distance in the MEAC, by nearly .30 meters, and his mark is currently the 21st-best in Div. I.
 
Brown (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.) won the pole vault at the Gamecock Opener this past weekend, setting a MEAC-best mark after clearing a height of 3.55 meters (11 feet, 7.75 inches). Her mark beat the previous MEAC best so far this season by .20 meters.
 
Mitchell (Sr., Chandler, Ariz.) won her third event title in four tries so far in the indoor campaign, taking the weight throw at the JDL January Kickoff with a MEAC-best mark of 18.81 meters (61 feet, 8.5 inches). She was also second in the shot put with a distance of 12.77 meters.
 
Other Top Performers
Gabrielle Collins (B-CU) ran an 8.86 in the women’s 60-meter hurdles at the Gamecock Opener, the fifth-fastest time in the conference this season.
 
Marc McCoy (B-CU) won the men’s triple jump at the Gamecock Opener, ranking 24th in the nation at 15.46 meters.
 
My’Kiyah Williams (B-CU) leaped 1.65 meters to finish fourth in the women’s high jump at the Gamecock Opener.
 
Malik John (CSU) won the men’s 60 meters at the Terrapin Invitational, running a 6.93.
 
Alanna Newby (CSU) was second in the women’s shot put at the Terrapin Invitational with a mark of 12.88 meters.
 
Tatiana Ogundeko (CSU) ran a school-record 5:07.35 (converted to 5:04.34) in the women’s mile run at the Terrapin Invitational.
 
Theodore Westcarr (CSU) leaped 6.87 meters at the Terrapin Invitational to win the men’s long jump.
 
Jermaine Byrd (HOW) finished fifth in the men’s 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.10 in the Virginia Tech Invitational.
 
Ameenah Saalih (HOW) ran a 24.70 in the women’s 200 meters at the Virginia Tech Invitational, finishing ninth.
 
Valencia McDowell (MSU) ran a 2:11.66 to finish second in the women’s 800 meters at the Gamecock Opener.
 
Alantra Mines (MSU) was second in the women’s triple jump with a distance of 12.50 meters, a new personal best.
 
Keon Rantin (MSU) ran a 21.28, the fastest men’s 200-meter time in the MEAC, at the Gamecock Opener.
 
Kobe-Jordan Rhooms (MSU) came in second in the men’s long jump at the Gamecock Opener at 7.02 meters.
 
Olivia Andrews (NCCU) won the women’s 400 meters at the JDL January Kickoff with a 57.96.
 
Gordon Lewis (NCCU) ran a 48.97 to win the men’s 400 meters at the JDL January Kickoff, and also helped the Eagles win the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:24.87.
 
Savien Hayes (NSU) ran a season-best 21.43 in the men’s 200 meters at the Gamecock Opener, and was also on the 4x400-meter relay team that ran a season-best 3:17.15.
 
Arieana Parker (NSU) set a new PR in the women’s weight throw with a mark of 15.73 meters at the Gamecock Opener.
 
Garth Warner (NSU) came in third in the men’s high jump at the Gamecock Opener with a mark of 2.08 meters.
