MEAC Indoor Track & Field Notes
NORFOLK, Va., Jan. 2, 2020 -- With the calendar flipping over to 2020, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) track & field programs are gearing up to resume their respective indoor schedules. Two institutions will be in action this weekend, as both Howard and Norfolk State will compete in the George Mason Invitational hosted by George Mason.
The 2019-20 indoor campaign started on the weekend of Dec. 7-8, when 10 of the MEAC's 11 institutions were in action. There were several standout performances that weekend, and heading into this weekend's action, the MEAC has 10 individuals ranked in the top 10 nationally in their respective events.
Morgan State's Infinnatie Rowe currently has the nation's top women's 800-meter time at 2:11.60, and the Bears also have a pair of runners ranked in the top 10 in the men's 400 meters: Keon Rantin is sixth with a 47.50, while Brandon James is eighth with a 48.08.
Martha Bissah of Norfolk State, who has been a distance staple for the last three years, is currently seventh in the nation at 3,000 meters, and Monae Nichols of Bethune-Cookman ranks tied for eighth in the long jump.
On the men's side, Bethune-Cookman has two individuals ranked in the top 10 nationally in field events: Kelton Williams is tied for eighth in the high jump and Marc McCoy is ninth in the triple jump.
There are three MEAC squads in the distance medley top 10 nationally: the Maryland Eastern Shore men (sixth), Delaware State men (eighth) and Howard women (sixth).
Rowe, Rantin, Williams and Nichols all earned MEAC weekly honors back in December for their performances.
The weekend of Jan. 10-11 will see 10 of the MEAC's 11 institutions back in action, and all 11 programs will be in action the following weekend, Jan. 17-18.
