GREENSBORO, N.C. – Sophomore Cambrea Sturgis recorded another first for the North Carolina A&T State track & field indoor program. Sturgis was magnificent over the weekend at the Jim Green Invitational hosted by the University of Kentucky at Nutter Field House.
For her efforts, she was named the NCAA Division I Women's National Athlete of the Week by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Tuesday. It marked the first time USTFCCCA has named an Aggie as a National Athlete of the Week during the indoor season.
Sturgis made her season debut on Friday in Lexington, Ky., when she set a new personal record in the 60 meters by winning her heat in 7.32. It was the fastest qualifying time of the first round. In the semifinals on Saturday, Sturgis bested her time from Friday by running a 7.24.
Again, it was the fastest qualifying time.
Later in the day, Sturgis outdid herself yet again. Sturgis posted a remarkable 7.15 in the 60-meter final to record the fastest time in the nation this year. Sturgis' 7.15 also broke the Jim Green Invitational meet record.
Also, Sturgis teamed with graduate Tori Ray and sophomores Nilaja Florence and Nia Lundy to finish second in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:40.65. It is the fourth-fastest time in the nation this year.
