North Carolina A&T State Recap | Coppin State Recap

AUSTIN, Texas, June 7, 2019—
Heading down the stretch, North Carolina A&T State’s Trevor Stewart appeared to be on his way to winning the 400 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium, which would’ve given the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) its first national title of the week.

Coming out of the final turn, Stewart had the lead, but as the field ran down the stretch, Houston’s Kahmari Montgomery caught Stewart just before the line and passed him for the win.

Stewart ran a personal-best and MEAC-record 44.25 to Montgomery’s 44.23.

Joseph Amoah of Coppin State had two shots at an NCAA title on Friday, and he got started with an eighth-place run in the 100 meters, clocking in at 10.22. He followed that by running a 20.19 in the 200 meters, coming in sixth.

The Aggies ran a season-best 38.59 in the 4x100-meter relay, but that time was only good enough for fifth. The 4x400-meter relay squad wrapped up the evening’s festivities by running a 3:01.50 – breaking their own MEAC record by almost three seconds – to finish fifth.

Michael Dickson competed in the men’s 110-meter hurdles with a 13.71, coming in sixth.

The Aggies compiled 19 points during the meet, tying with Arkansas for 15th in the team standings. Texas Tech edged Florida by 10 points to claim the NCAA men’s team title.

Friday’s competitors are likely to be named First Team All-Americans early next week, when the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announces its All-America teams.

The NCAA Outdoor Championships conclude on Saturday with women’s finals. The MEAC will be represented in both the 100 and 200 meters, with Kayla White of North Carolina A&T State running in both, while her teammate Cambrea Sturgis will run for an NCAA title in the 200 and Norfolk State’s Kiara Grant will do the same in the 100.

Things will kick off at 6:32 p.m. EST with the Aggies in the 4x100-meter relay.

TV coverage will start at 6:30 p.m. EST on ESPN2.
