Coppin's Amoah Named USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic Region Track Athlete of Year

NEW ORLEANS – Coppin State's Joseph Amoah has been named the Mid-Atlantic Region's Track Athlete of the Year, it was announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) on Friday afternoon.

Each of the nine regions – Great Lakes, Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, Mountain, Northeast, South, South Central, Southeast and West – honored both genders' top track athletes and field athletes as well as the top men's and women's head coaches and assistant coaches.

A junior from Greater Accra, Ghana, Amoah is ranked 10th nationally in the 200-meter dash at 20.20 and 13th nationally in the 100-meter dash at 10.09, both of which are school-records. Amoah ran both times at the MEAC Championships and became the fastest Ghanian sprinter in the last 24 years, qualifying him for both the World Championships and 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Amoah earned his way in both events for the NCAA National Championships in Austin, Texas on June 5-8, and will also be a part of the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays that also qualified in school-record time at the NCAA East Prelims.

Amoah clocked the fastest time in the 100-meter dash (10.10), while taking sixth in the 200-meter dash (20.24) at the East Preliminaries last weekend, and the Eagles are one of just 10 schools that have both relays heading to nationals.

Amoah will open the National Championships with four events on Wednesday, June 5, starting with the 4x100-meter relay at 6:32 p.m. along with Keshaun Hodges, Theodore Westcarr and Joseph Manu.

Amoah is also scheduled to run the 100-meter dash at 7:46 p.m., the 200-meter dash at 8:44 p.m. and the 4x400-meter relay at 9:48 p.m. along with Abayie Opuni, Malik John and Anija Addison.
