MEAC Announces Weekly Track & Field Honors

NORFOLK, Va., April 24, 2019North Carolina A&T State junior Trevor Stewart was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced today, while North Carolina A&T State freshman Cambrea Sturgis was selected as Women’s Track Athlete of the Week. Norfolk State junior Bobby Price earned Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors, while Howard sophomore Kaylah Clark was named Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.
 
Stewart (Jr., Lorton, Va.) ran a school-record 44.54 in the 400 meters this past weekend at LSU, winning the event and posting the second-fastest time in the world in the process. He leads the MEAC in that event, and Stewart is just .01 seconds off the fastest time, set by South Carolina’s Quincy Hall.
 
Sturgis (Fr., Kannapolis, N.C.) won the 200 meters at LSU this past weekend, turning in the MEAC’s best time and the second-fastest time in the world with a 22.71. She eclipsed her own teammate Kayla White in the event, and she trails only Anavia Battle of Ohio State in the national rankings.
 
Price (Jr., Virginia Beach, Va.) set a new personal best mark in the long jump this past weekend at Christopher Newport, taking gold in the event with a distance of 7.25 meters (23 feet, 9.5 inches). He currently ranks third in the MEAC in the long jump.
 
Clark (So., Miami, Fla.) came in third in the hammer throw and fourth in the shot put this past weekend at the Morgan State Legacy Meet, earning top-10 conference marks in both events. She tossed the hammer 48.04 meters to rank sixth in the conference, and her mark of 12.42 meters in the shot put is ninth in the MEAC.
 
Other Top Performers
Joseph Amoah (CSU) won the 200 meters at the Morgan State Legacy Meet with a MEAC-best 20.47, ranking tied for seventh in the nation.
 
Tatiana Ogundeko (CSU) came in second in the 1,500 meters at Morgan State with a 4:38.03.
 
Uchechi Onouha (HOW) won the 100-meter hurdles at Morgan State with a 13.79, ranking sixth in the MEAC.
 
Kobe-Jordan Rhooms (MSU) won both the long jump and the high jump at the Morgan State Legacy Meet, currently ranking seventh in the conference in the high jump.
 
Bethany White (NCCU) ran a meet-record 11.45 in the 100 meters at Duke, winning the event and posting the third-best time in the MEAC this season.
 
Evans Cheruiyot (NSU) ran a 30:31.16 in the 10,000 meters at the Virginia Challenge.
