MEAC Announces Weekly Track & Field Honors

NORFOLK, Va., April 17, 2019South Carolina State senior Demek Kemp was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced today, while North Carolina A&T State freshman Kamaya Debose-Epps was selected as Women’s Track Athlete of the Week. North Carolina Central junior Omega Smalls earned Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors, while Bethune-Cookman senior Quamecha Morrison was named Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.
 
Kemp (Sr., Monroe, Ga.) set the nation’s best mark – and the second-fastest time in the world – in the 100 meters this past weekend, turning in a 10.03 to win gold at the Gamecock Invite. That time was a facility and school record. Kemp also helped break the school record in the 4x100-meter relay with a 39.63 – the second-fastest time in the MEAC this season and 19th-fastest in the country.
 
Debose-Epps (Fr., Winston-Salem, N.C.) won a pair of events this past weekend in the Aggie Invitational, setting top-five marks in the conference in the process. She ranks second in the MEAC – and 60th in the nation – after helping the 4x100-meter relay team win gold with a 45.12, and her 11.61 in the 100 meters not only won the event, but it ranks her fifth in the conference and tied for 71st nationally.
 
Smalls (Jr., North Charleston, S.C.) further cemented himself as one of the MEAC’s best high jumpers over the weekend, winning gold in the event at the Aggie Invitational with a mark of 2.06 meters (six feet, nine inches). He currently ranks third in the conference in the high jump.
 
Morrison (Sr., Beaufort, S.C.) posted the MEAC’s best mark in the heptathlon this past weekend in the Miami Hurricane Alumni Invitational, racking up 4,505 points and finishing top-five in the event. She won the high jump portion of the heptathlon, while also finishing second in the 200 meters.
 
Other Top Performers
Carlin Berryhill (B-CU) won the 1,500 meters and 5,000 meters at Miami.
 
Sade McCreath-Tardiel (B-CU) set the fourth-fastest time in the MEAC in the 100 meters (11.49) and the sixth-fastest in the 200 meters (24.09).
 
Joseph Amoah (CSU) won the 200 meters (20.98) and came in second in the 100 meters (10.23) at the Aggie Invitational.
 
Tatiana Ogundeko (CSU) won the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:40.06 at the Aggie Invitational, while finishing second in the 800 meters (2:09.22).
 
Shemar Parker (MDES) cleared 3.90 meters in the pole vault at the Eastern Shore Challenge, ranking fourth in the MEAC.
 
Atinuke Shittu (MDES) won the long jump at the Eastern Shore Challenge at 5.52 meters.
 
Duvaire Wauchope (MDES) won the 800 meters and 4x400-meter relay at the Eastern Shore Challenge.
 
Annastacia Barham (MSU) ran a 24.19 to finish second in the 200 meters at the Aggie Invitational, while also finishing fourth in the 400 meters (55.06).
 
Joshua Smith (MSU) won the discus throw at the Aggie Invitational with a distance of 46.10 meters, sixth in the MEAC.
 
Rodney Rowe (NCAT) ran a 10.10 – second in the MEAC, fourth in the nation – in the 100 meters at the Aggie Invitational.
 
Aaron Wilkerson (NCAT) won the shot put at 15.59 meters at the Aggie Invitational.
 
Martha Bissah (NSU) came in third in the 1,500 meters with a 4:19.00 in Charlotte.
 
Daiysa Burrell (NSU) set a personal best in the discus throw at Charlotte, ranking third in the MEAC at 42.99 meters.
 
Evans Cheruiyot (NSU) ranks fifth in the MEAC at 5,000 meters after winning in Charlotte this past weekend with a 15:01.76.
