Morgan State sophomore Keon Rantin was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s Track Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced today, while
Howard junior Oluchi Ike was selected as Women’s Track Athlete of the Week.
North Carolina Central sophomore Marvin Jones earned Men’s Field Athlete of the Week honors, while
Maryland Eastern Shore freshman Antinuke Shittu was named Women’s Field Athlete of the Week.
Rantin (Philadelphia, Pa.) ranks second in the MEAC in both the 100 and 200 meters after a strong performance this past weekend in the 49er Classic in Charlotte, N.C. He ran a 10.68 – a personal best – in the 100 meters, before turning in a 21.47 in the 200 meters. Rantin finished in the top five in both races, while also helping the Bears’ 4x400-meter relay team take gold with a 3:15.03 – also second-fastest in the MEAC.
Ike (Jr., Upper Marlboro, Md.) posted the MEAC’s fastest time in the 400-meter hurdles this past weekend in the Charlotte 49er Classic, running a 1:01.75 to capture the gold medal.
Jones (So., Hillsborough, N.C.) established himself as one of the nation’s best high jumpers early in the outdoor campaign, thanks to his winning leap of six feet, 10.57 inches (2.10 meters) at the Charlotte 49er Classic. That mark not only tops the MEAC, it is also tied for the ninth-best mark in the nation.
Shittu (Fr., Germantown, Md.) won the triple jump at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invite this past weekend, leaping 11.54 meters (37 feet, 10.5 inches) to rank sixth in the conference.
Other Top Performers
Erykah Jerome (CSU) was third in the 400-mter dash at the Maryland Invitational after running a 58.66.
Cheyenne Johnson (CSU) finished second in the 400-meter hurdles with a 55.36, while anchoring the 4x400 relay team that came in second.
Alanna Newby (CSU) was third in the discus and fourth in the shot put at the Maryland Invitational.
Michael Scott (CSU) won the long jump at the Maryland Invitational with a MEAC-best mark of 22 feet, five inches.
Mercy Chemutai (MDES) ran an 18:49.21 in the 5,000 meters, finishing eighth and setting the fourth-best time in the MEAC.
Judah Corriette (MDES) was ninth in the javelin throw with a MEAC-best mark of 51.52 meters (169 feet).
Chisom Onukwugha (FAMU) is second in the MEAC in the 110-meter hurdles after running a 12.88.
Kobe-Jordan Rhooms (MSU) finished second in both the high jump and the long jump at the 49er Classic.
