After an action-packed second day of the 2019 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Prince George’s Sports & Learning Complex on Friday, the Bethune-Cookman men and Florida A&M women lead their respective standings.

The B-CU men hold a 15-point lead – 66 to 51 – over two-time defending champion North Carolina A&T State. Norfolk State is third with 48 points, while North Carolina Central and Maryland Eastern Shore round out the top five.

After two days, Florida A&M holds a slim lead in the women’s team standings with 62.5 points. Bethune-Cookman sits in second with 57 points, while two-time defending champion North Carolina A&T State is third with 30 points.

Norfolk State (18) and South Carolina State (16) round out the top five.

North Carolina A&T State is looking to become the first program in MEAC history to sweep the men’s and women’s indoor titles three consecutive years.

Bethune-Cookman snagged the first three event titles of the day – starting with Brent Heholt winning gold in the men’s heptathlon, scoring 4,590 points. He posted the best mark in three of the seven events – the long jump, shot put and high jump – and his worst event finish was fourth.

Also for the Wildcats, Quamecha Morrison defended her MEAC title in the women’s high jump with a leap of 1.82 meters (5 feet, 11.5 inches) – a mark that has her tied for ninth in the nation. She followed that up by winning the pentathlon with 3,454 points, turning in the best mark in the high jump and finishing second in the 60-meter hurdles.

Norfolk State’s Jacob Milton, already one of the nation’s best in the high jump, won yet another MEAC gold medal in that event on Friday. He cleared 2.10 meters (6 feet, 10.75 inches) to claim the indoor record for the third consecutive year.

Florida A&M’s Taylor Gorum, who last year was the MEAC champion in the shot put, won the women’s weight throw title on Friday with a MEAC-record mark of 19.11 meters (62 feet, 8.5 inches).

Derrick Wheeler of North Carolina A&T State tossed the weight 17.48 meters (57 feet, 4.25 inches) to take gold in the men’s weight throw.

North Carolina A&T State capped off the afternoon by capturing the women’s distance medley relay, running a 12:01.86 to hold off Norfolk State and take the final women’s gold medal of the day.

Bethune-Cookman won the men’s distance medley, holding off a hard-charging North Carolina A&T State on the last 800-meter stretch to claim MEAC gold with a time of 10:13.14.

Kayla White of North Carolina A&T State, who is ranked in the top 10 nationally in three separate events, qualified for two more finals on Friday – on top of her performance in qualifying for the 200-meter finals on Thursday. She posted the fastest time in the 60-meter dash at 7.34, and her 8.28 in the 60-meter hurdles was second-fastest behind teammate Madeleine Akobundu’s 8.26.

Of the eight finalists in each event, four of them are Aggies.

The Aggies’ Jaylan Mitchell turned in the fastest time in the men’s 60-meter dash prelims with a 6.74, edging out teammate Rodney Rowe. Four Aggies advanced to the final. North Carolina A&T State also had the fastest time in the men’s 60-meter hurdles, as Michael Dickson ran a 7.81.
