This weekend marks the last such for Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) indoor track & field before the championship meet, which will be held Feb. 21-23 at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
North Carolina A&T State enters this week with the highest national ranking in program history on the women's side, as the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) computer rankings list the Aggie women at No. 14. The A&T men currently sit 42nd in those national rankings.
Part of the Aggies' surge is thanks to senior Kayla White, who posted the world's fastest time in 2019 in the 200-meter dash this past weekend, setting a new MEAC record with a 22.82. Her performance helped propel her to being named MEAC Women's Track Athlete of the Week, as the Aggies swept the conference's weekly honors.
On the men's side, Kermani Mighty was named Track Athlete of the Week and Brandon Hicklin earned Field Athlete of the Week honors. Nazah Reddick joined White on the women's side, earning Women's Field Athlete of the Week accolades.
Deep into the 2019 indoor season, several MEAC student-athletes rank among the top 25 in the nation in their respective events. On the men’s side, North Carolina A&T’s Rodney Rowe tied for eighth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.70. Trequan Barnes of Norfolk State is ranked 14th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 46.17; he is joined by Tyrell Richard of South Carolina State, who is ranked ninth with a time of 46.01, and Trevor Stewart of North Carolina A&T State, who is comes in 21st with a time of 46.66.
North Carolina A&T State’s Michael Dickson is tied for 13th in the 60-meter hurdles, and he is joined by Aaron Lewis of Coppin State, who is tied for 17th, and North Carolina A&T State’s 4x400-meter relay team sits in 15th place with a time of 3:07.22.
In the jumps, Norfolk State’s Jacob Milton is tied for 20th in the high jump.
On the women’s side, White also sits tied for 10th nationally in the 60-meter dash with a 7.25 time; she is also tied for fourth in the 60-meter hurdles (8.07). Cambrea Sturgis of North Carolina A&T State is comes in at 11nth place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.19, while Martha Bissah of Norfolk State leads the nation in the 800-meter run with a converted time of 2:02.58.
Madeleine Akobundu of North Carolina A&T State is tied for 11th in the 60-meter hurdles (8.14), while Bethune Cookman’s Quamecha Morrison is tied for 12th in the high jump.
The 2019 MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships will be held Feb. 21-23 in the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md. Saturday's finals will be broadcast live on FloTrack.
That Saturday will also see the MEAC and Howard partner for the Run to Cure Sickle Cell, a 5k run/walk that will include Howard president Dr. Wayne A. I. Frederick and raise awareness for sickle cell disease. Those who participate in the 5K will receive free admission to Saturday's championship events.
