2019-20 MEAC Indoor Track & Field Notes
The 2019-20 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) indoor track & field season begins this Saturday with seven teams in action, as the conference looks to build on a 2018-19 campaign that saw fast times, record marks and two national champions.
Delaware State, Howard and Maryland Eastern Shore will kick things off on Saturday with the Cappy Anderson Invitational in Princess Anne, Md., while Florida A&M -- with the women in their first season under head coach Nadia Alexander-Pompey -- will open the season in the Clemson Opener.
Morgan State will compete in the Navy Invitational in Annapolis., Md, while North Carolina Central will be at the JDL College Kickoff Classic and Norfolk State will stay close to home at the Christopher Newport Holiday Open in Newport News, Va.
Bethune-Cookman, Coppin State, defending MEAC indoor champion North Carolina A&T State and South Carolina State will open their indoor seasons after the New Year.
North Carolina A&T State has won the men’s and women’s indoor MEAC titles in each of the past three seasons, the first program in conference history to accomplish that feat. In that span, the Aggies have also won three MEAC men’s outdoor titles (2017-19), two MEAC women’s outdoor titles (2017, 2019) and the 2018 MEAC men’s cross country title.
The NCAT men won MEAC titles in cross country, indoor track & field and outdoor track & field in 2018-19, becoming the first program to complete the trifecta since the Hampton women in 2011-12.
Norfolk State swept the 2019 MEAC men’s and women’s cross country titles on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Delaware State Sports & Learning Complex in Smyrna, Del. For the men, it was their first title since 2017 and 13th overall, while the Spartan women claimed their first championship since 2009 and second overall.
Martha Bissah won the women’s 5K race for the third straight year, becoming the first woman to accomplish the feat in MEAC history.
MEAC student-athletes have won six NCAA Indoor event championships, including two this past season, courtesy of South Carolina State’s Tyrell Richard (who won the men's 400 meters) and North Carolina A&T State’s Kayla White (who won the women's 200 meters -- and nearly added gold in the 60-meter hurdles).
