Track Standout McCorory to be Inducted into VHSL Hall of Fame

Hampton University graduate and track & field standout Francena McCorory will be inducted into the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Hall of Fame on Sunday, June 24, as part of the league's 10-member Class of 2018.

Before winning three NCAA championships at Hampton and becoming a gold medalist at the 2012 London Olympics, McCorory was a standout at Bethel High School in Hampton, Va. She led the Bruins to three indoor and three outdoor Group AAA team state championships, winning 15 individual gold medals (a state-record eight indoor and seven outdoor) in addition to six relay golds.

She was the first girl ever to win the outdoor 100-meter dash four consecutive seasons . Indoors, she capped a stellar prep career by winning the 55-, 300- and 500-meter dash races in leading Bethel to the indoor state crown as a senior.

She also set national records at 300 and 400 meters.

McCorory was named Track & Field News’ Indoor Athlete of the Year as a senior after setting a national record of 51.93 seconds in the 400. She continued to pile up national honors during a four-year career at Hampton University, winning three NCAA titles -- her second coming in a national indoor-record 50.54.

She went on to win six gold medals in major international competitions following her graduation from Hampton. Those included two gold medals each on the 4x400-meter relay in the Olympics and World Championships outdoors, an indoor 400-meter dash gold and an indoor 4x400-meter relay gold.

McCorory was also a 2017 inductee into the MEAC Hall of Fame.

Tickets for the induction dinner, which will be in Charlottesville, Va., are $35 and can be purchased here.
