Day 2 Results
GREENSBORO, N.C., May 4, 2018—With two days in the books at the 2018 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, the Florida A&M women and Bethune-Cookman men lead their respective standings.
After two days and eight scored events, Florida A&M leads the women’s team standings with 113.5 points. Bethune-Cookman, with 51.5 points, sits in second and Hampton is third with 47 points. Defending champion North Carolina A&T State sits in fourth with 45 points.
Bethune-Cookman leads the men’s standings with 78 points through eight events. Hampton is second with 46 points, while Morgan State sits third with 40 points and defending champion North Carolina A&T State is fourth with 35 points.
Norfolk State (34 points) is in fifth.
Florida A&M’s Ed’Quisha Alvin came within 10 points of breaking the MEAC outdoor record in the women’s heptathlon, taking gold in the event with 5,028 points to win the first event title of the day.
Jerrick Powell of Hampton defended his title in the men’s decathlon, winning gold with 6,649 points.
Loren James of North Carolina A&T State took gold in the women’s shot put with a distance of 48 feet, 8.75 inches (14.85 meters).
Jeremiah Peters of Bethune-Cookman took the men’s shot put at 56 feet, 10 inches (17.32 meters).
In the men’s long jump, Lloyd Hylton of Morgan State tied his season best and the conference’s best mark in 2018, leaping 25 feet, 1.25 inches (7.65 meters).
Florida A&M’s Onnika Scott threw the hammer 172 feet, one inch (52.45 meters) to win the gold medal. On the men’s side, North Carolina A&T State’s Derrick Wheeler won gold in the hammer throw with a mark of 173 feet, seven inches (52.91 meters).
The Lady Rattlers also picked up a gold medal in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, with Nancy Murgor running an 11:35.12 to take the MEAC title.
In the men’s 3,000-meter steeplechase, Hampton’s Wesley Kirui backed up his 10,000-meter gold from Thursday by running a 9:06.63 to take another MEAC title.
In preliminary action, North Carolina A&T State posted the top time in both the men’s 110-meter hurdles (Michael Dickson, 13.54) and women’s 100-meter hurdles (Kayla White, 12.92). In fact, the Aggies had the top three times in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, and three of the top four times in the men’s 110-meter hurdles.
White also posted the top time in the women’s 100-meter dash with an 11.30, followed by teammate India Brown, the defending event champion, whose 11.41 was the second-fastest time in the preliminary heats.
Tori Ray, also from North Carolina A&T State, turned in the fastest preliminary time in the women’s 400-meter dash, running a 53.65.
A day after setting the fast time in the men’s 200-meter dash, South Carolina State’s Tyrell Richard repeated the feat in the preliminaries of the 400-meter dash, running a 45.50 to win his heat race.
Joseph Amoah of Coppin State ran a 10.20 to post the top time in the men’s 100-meter dash preliminaries. He edged South Carolina State’s Demek Kemp by .06 seconds.
Martha Bissah of Norfolk State, the defending champion in the women’s 800-meter run, posted the top preliminary time on Friday, winning her heat race in 2:06.80.
Jonathan Moore of Bethune-Cookman ran a 1:50.66 to post the top time in the men’s 800-meter run.
Saturday’s competition will begin at 9 a.m. with the women’s pole vault. Running events will begin at 1 p.m. with the women’s 4x100-meter relay.
