PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Former Hawk Gayon Evans (Clarendon, Jamaica) took home a bronze medal for her country at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia. She ran a personal best 11.22 seconds to secure of one Jamaica’s 15 medals.
Evans had to run three rounds to earn her medal. In her first two events - a heat and a semifinal - she posted times of 11.37 seconds in each race. That mark won the heat Evans participated in, and earned her second place in the semifinal.
A transfer from Oklahoma Baptist, Evans ran as a Hawk for two seasons. In her time on the Eastern Shore she set the record in the women’s indoor 200 dash and helped set a new record in the indoor 4x400 relay. Evans also qualified for the 2014 NCAA Outdoor National Championships, the last Hawk to do so until Khalil Rmidi Kinini achieved the feat until last year.
Former Hawk Dillon Simon (Roseau, Dominica) and current junior Judah Corriette (Roseau, Dominica) also ran for their country. Simon advanced to the final in the shot put with a distance of 19.44 meters. He placed 10th in the finals.
Corriette ran the 800 meters, finishing ninth in his heat with a time of 1:57.79.
Jamaica stands 10th in the medal count with four gold, six silver and five bronze. Dominica - a country of 75,000 compared to Jamaica’s 2.8 million - has earned a bronze medal in the triple jump.
