Jaylan Mitchell and Kayla White of North Carolina A&T State were selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference's (MEAC) Men's and Women's Track Athletes of the Week. North Carolina A&T State’s Lasheon Strozier and Bethune-Cookman’s Quamecha Morrison were named the MEAC Men's and Women's Field Athletes of the Week, the conference announced today.
Mitchell (Durham, N.C.) opened the year with a bang as he holds the fastest time in the nation following his first-place run of 6.6 at the Clemson Orange & Purple Invitational on Jan. 6. He also set a personal best and tied a school record in the event also.
White (Miami, Fla.) set a personal-best in the 60-meter dash as she ran a time of 7.4 at the Clemson Orange & Purple Invitational. Her time ranks 13th nationally and is tops in the MEAC.
Strozier (Douglasville, Ga.) was the top collegiate finisher (2nd overall) in the triple jump at the Clemson Orange & Purple Invitational as he logged a jump of 50-7.5. Locked in a battle with former MEAC and Bethune-Cookman standout Michael Tiller and fellow A&T freshman Semaj Anderson, Strozier recorded the mark on his second attempt.
Morrison (Beaufort, S.C.) holds the top mark in the nation after winning the high jump this past weekend in Clemson, S.C. Last year’s MEAC Indoor Champion cleared 6-0.5 in her first jump at that mark.
OTHER TOP PERFORMERS
Naomi Brown (Morgan State) captured first place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.99 at the GMU Father Diamond Invitational.
Deyvon Howell (MSU) earned a second-place finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.83 and participated on the mile relay which finished in first place at the Father Diamond Invitational.
Asia Joe (Bethune-Cookman) ran a time of 56.73 in the 400 and participated on the mile relay team which ran 3:18.93.
Destiny Standford (Howard) won the 1,000-meter run clocking in at 3:02.01 and participated on the distance medley relay team which captured first place at the GMU Father Diamond Invitational.
Zhane Washington (Morgan State) placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 38-5 at the GMU Father Diamond Invitational.
