SSU's Track and Field Assistant to be Honored by Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Savannah State University track and field assistant coach Rephel Martin will be one of nine cross country/track and field alumni to be honored with jersey retirements by the University of North Carolina at Charlotte during the football game against Eastern Michigan on Saturday. 

Martin, who is in his eighth season at SSU, competed at Charlotte from 1997-00 as a jumper and sprinter and became the first male All-American for the track and field program after placing seventh in the triple jump at the 2000 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. 

The Dover, New Jersey native was an eight-time conference champion in the long jump, triple jump and the 55-meter dash and was named the 2000 Conference USA Track Athlete of the Year. He is a two-time conference champion in the long jump and three-time triple jump conference champion. 

Martin still holds the Conference USA outdoor long jump record with a jump of 8.05 meters (26-5.0) set on May 12, 2000.  He also holds the outdoor school record in the long jump and in the triple jump with a distance of 16.17 meters (53-0.75).
