GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Florida A&M Lady Rattlers and the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats sit at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final day of competition in the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
On the women's side through six events, Florida A&M leads the field with 89 points. Coppin State is second with 51, while Hampton is close behind them in third with 46 points.
Khemani Roberts, of Coppin State, took top honors in the heptathlon with 4.539 points. Kaitlin Scott, of Hampton, placed second with 4.439 points, while Delaware State’s Faleesha Dowe finished third (4,214).
Bethune-Cookman’s Summer Brown was the winner in the long jump with a leap of 5.91m (19-4.75ft.). Hampton’s Siobhan Ford-Holland finished second in 5.88m (19-3.50ft.) and Tanise Edwards, of Maryland Eastern Shore, was third in 5.72m (18-9.25ft.).
Judith Kibii, of Florida A&M, took top honors in the 3,000m steeplechase, with a time of 11:10.83, to defeat teammate Cynthia Chelelgo, who was second in 11:20.15. Morgan State’s Karen Escobedo placed third in 11:30.20.
Florida A&M’s Andrea Aaron won the shot put, with a throw of 13.56m (44-6ft.), to edge out Dominique Bynum-Cooper, from Howard, who was second in 13.54m (44-5.25ft.). Catoria Sirmon was third from Bethune-Cookman in 13.53m (44-4.75ft.).
Kristen Deacon, of Coppin State, won the hammer throw in 47.47m (155-9ft.) and Aaron finished second in 46.69m (153-2ft.). Demetria Dickens, of North Carolina A&T State, placed third in 46.20m (151-7ft.).
In men's action, the Wildcats have 65 points to lead heading into day three. Maryland Eastern Shore is in second with 60 points, followed by North Carolina A&T State with 42.
Hampton’s Christian Faber-Kinney won the decathlon with a total of 6,358 points as he captured the discus and pole vault events on Friday to pull away for the title. Teammate Jerrick Powell was second with 6,002 points, followed by Taj Showalter, of Maryland Eastern Shore, with 5,829 points.
Hampton’s Sulaiman Fared won the shot put, with a toss of 17.22m (56-6ft.), with Christopher Lee, of Norfolk State, second at 16.54m (54-3.25ft.) and Anthony Britt, of South Carolina State, third in 16.25m (53-3.75ft.).
North Carolina A&T State’s Frank Quarles repeated as long jump champion with a leap of 7.80m (25-7.25ft.). Bethune-Cookman went second, third and fourth with Kenneth Fisher (7.68m/25-2.5ft.), Nicholas Williams (7.62m/25-0 ft.) and Demetrius Rooks (7.53m/24-8.5 ft.) taking those spots.
Maryland Eastern Shore’s Khalil Rmidi Kinini took the top spot in the 3,000m steeplechase in a time of 9:21.10. UMES teammate Oussama Chouati finished second in 9:27.84, while Xavier Walton, of Bethune-Cookman, was third in 9:36.16.
Rico Duncan, of Maryland Eastern Shore, won the hammer throw, with a toss of 48.73m (159-10ft.). Steven Thomas, from Coppin State, was second in 47.29m (155-2ft.) while South Carolina State’s Matthew Aleruchi finished third in 46.86m (153-9ft.).
The competition concludes Saturday, with events scheduled to start at 9 a.m. with field events including: men's and women's pole vault, javelin, and triple jump. The women's and men's 4x100m relays will begin the running finals at 1 p.m. Rounding out the evening's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 4:35 p.m.
