BALTIMORE, Md. - The 13th annual Legacy Meet got underway on Thursday afternoon at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Morgan State University. The host Lady Bears ended Day 1 with eight points and are tied for fifth-place with fellow Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foes, Hampton and Howard.
Crosstown rival Towson leads after three scored events with a total of 30 points, while two more MEAC foes in Norfolk State (24 points) and Coppin State (14 points), are second and third, respectively. George Washington scored 10 points on the opening day and is in fourth place.
Day 1 saw a Legacy Meet record fall in the women’s 3000 meter steeplechase, as George Washington’s Ariana North ran a time of 11:00.94, breaking the previous meet record of 11:01.89 set last year by Melissa Mazzo of the University of Delaware.
The Lady Bears scoring came in the hammer throw with Nikelene McLean and Favour Ihekweme both finishing in the top six. McLean had a throw of 43.14m (141-06) to finish fourth and give Morgan State five points, while Ihekweme scored two points with her sixth-place finish with a distance of 41.96 (137-08).
Nikelene would also place 11th in the javelin throw with a mark of 23.40m (76-09). Norfolk State’s Kiara Howell would win the javelin event with a throw of 41.34m (135-07).
Coppin State’s Khemani Roberts leads in the heptathlon with a total of 3134 points after four scored events. Kaitlin Scott of Hampton is in second with 2861 points and Randi Bohler of Coppin State is third with 2801 points. Roberts would finish first in both the high jump and 200 meter dash, and came in second in the shot put as part of the heptathlon. Scott won the shot put event.
Day 2 of the Legacy Meet, which this year honors the MSU track and field classes of 1981-85, gets underway on Saturday with the conclusion of the decathlon and heptathlon at 9:30 a.m., followed by the start of the rest of the field events at 10 a.m. with the discus, high jump, pole vault, long jump, shot put and triple jump.
The first running event of the day begins at 10 a.m. with the women’s 400 hurdles. Morgan State will also hold its senior day ceremony on Saturday (April 23) at 2:20 p.m.
