SSU Records 11 Wins and a School-Record
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. – The Savannah State men’s and women’s track and field teams 11 victories, including one school record, and four second place finishes at the Lowcountry Collegiate at the Peyton Johnson Moore Track Saturday.
Derrick Akins won the discus throw and set a school-record with a throw of 47.28 meters (155-1.75) breaking the previous record of 45.59 meters (149-7) set last season by Akins in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Outdoor Championship.
The men’s field recorded three additional victories with Malik Franklin winning the triple jump with a jump of 14.93 meters (48-11.75), Dolphurs Hayes winning the pole vault with a distance of 4.57 meters (15-0) and Connor Christian winning the shot put with a distance of 14.80 meters (48-7).
The men’s track team recorded a win after Savannah State’s 4x400-meter relay team won with a time of 3:13.70.
The women’s track team recorded five victories with Asia Stinson winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.81 and won the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.95, Jahmee Reeves winning the 400-meter dash with a time of 55.65 and Savannah State’s 4x100-meter relay team won with a time of 46.89 and the 4x400-meter relay team won with a time of 3:53.21.
The women’s field team recorded a victory with Kourtney Sizemore’s 3.04 meters (10-0) in the pole vault.
The men’s track team recorded five top-three finishes with Nigel Brown finishing second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 21.15, Kevin Todd Woodring’s second place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.55, Morgan Ellis-Foster’s second place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.12, followed by Brandon Davis with a time of 55.45 and Savannah State’s “B” team finished third in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:18.24.
The men’s field team recorded an additional top-five finish in the long jump as Franklin finished fourth with a jump of 6.86 meters (22-6.25).
The women’s track team recorded an additional top-three finish as Tyneshia Quarterman finished third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.19.
The women’s field team recorded an additional three top-five finishes as Alysia Potts finished second in the pole vault with a distance of 2.74 meters (9-0), Miara Elmore finished fourth in the triple jump with a jump of 11.09 meters (36-4.75) and Ravyn Mike finished fifth in the long jump with a jump of 5.36 meters (17-7).
Other men’s track results include, Andre Houser-Cross’ eighth place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 51.35, while Randolph Barratt finished 12th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.82.
Other men’s field results include, Christian’s seventh place finish in the discus throw with a throw of 38.75 meters (127-1.75).
Other women’s field results include, Mike’s seventh place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 10.60 meters (34-9.5).
The men’s and women’s track and field teams travel to Mt. Pleasant, S.C., for the Holy City Relays on Saturday, April 23.

Titles Abound For Track At Historic Hampton Relays
HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men’s and women’s track & field teams combined to win nine events on Saturday at the historic Hampton Relays, which took place at a sun-splashed Armstrong Stadium.
The Pirates racked up five event wins, and the Lady Pirates had four.
Senior Trey Holloway gave the Pirates their lone running title, taking the 110-meter hurdles after running a 14.01 in the final.
Three of the Pirates’ five titles came in field events; freshman Trey Clark took the pole vault with a season-best mark of 4.18 meters (13 feet, 8.5 inches), senior Sulamian Fareed threw the shot put a season-best 16.41 meters (53 feet, 10.25 inches) to take gold, and freshman Jerrick Powell won the javelin with a season-best mark of 52.65 meters (172 feet, nine inches).
Powell was also on the 4x200-meter relay team – along with freshman Chace Washington-Saunders, sophomore Justin Beatty, and sophomore Sharlanjo Nelson – that won gold after turning in a 1:27.49.
Senior Ce’aira Brown gave the Lady Pirates an event win by taking the 800-meter run with a time of 2:06.74, while freshman Crystal Eley won the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:04.35.
The Lady Pirates also won both the 4x100- and 4x200-meter relays.
Sophomore Asonya Anderson, senior Kristian Young, sophomore Meshala Morton, and senior Tanisha Greene ran a season-best 45.63 to take gold in the 4x100-meter relay, while freshmen Kylie McMillan, Lauren Lyons, Saenea Williams, and Tiara Robinson won the 4x200-meter relay with a 1:41.21.
Greene was second in the 200-meter dash – behind former Lady Pirate Francena McCorory’s 23.20 – with a season-best 23.92, and Morton was second in the 100-meter dash with an 11.97.
Redshirt freshman Pollyanna Velasco ran a 4:48.29 to come in second in the 1,500-meter run.
Sophomore Kayla Key was second in the javelin with a season-best mark of 34.91 meters (114 feet, six inches).
Among the former Hampton track athletes to win events on Saturday were McCorory in the women’s 200-meter dash and Breana Norman with an 11.58 in the women’s 100-meter dash.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will be in Baltimore, Md. on Friday and Saturday for the Morgan State Legacy Meet.

NCCU’s McClam Wins Long Jump in Busy Day at Hampton Relays
HAMPTON, Va. – Joshua McClam’s busy day for North Carolina Central University included a win in the long jump and a career-best time in the 100-meter dash during the Hampton University Relays on Saturday.
McClam’s long jump victory highlighted 14 top-five finishes collected by the NCCU men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams.
A senior out of Holly Springs, North Carolina, McClam recorded a distance of 7.36 meters to beat 27 other competitors in the long jump, and posted his fastest time in the 100m dash at 10.70 seconds to place fourth in the preliminaries.
McClam also joined Deonte Williams, Isaac Roberts and Jonathan Williams to place second in the 4x100m relay in 40.97 seconds, the Eagles best time of the outdoor season, and ran with Dominick Lemonious, Victor Dunbar and Ronnie Lovick in the 4x200m relay to finish third in 1:28.60.
Jaszmine Bowman and Zoe Ellis continued to spark the NCCU women in the field. Bowman placed second in the shot put with a toss of 13.04m, while Ellis finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 12.10m.
Carlton Edwards, Jr. placed third in the 400m hurdles, but was the fastest collegiate runner with a season-best time of 53.85.
NCCU returns to action on Friday and Saturday, April 22-23 at the Duke University Invitational.

Lady Bears Have Productive Day At Hampton Relays
BALTIMORE, Md. -- The Morgan State women’s track and field team had a productive outing on Saturday, as they competed in the historic Hampton Relays held at Armstrong Stadium on the campus of Hampton University.
The Lady Bears would finish with 12 top-10 finishes, seven of which were top-five mark, including its 4X100 relay team.
On the track Saborrah Cooper, Brittany Meads and Chantai Smith led Morgan State with their third-place finishes in their respective events. Cooper ran a time of 14.93 seconds in the 100 meter hurdles, Meads was clocked at 56.85 seconds in the 400 meter dash and Smith ran a time of 2:15.78 in the 800 meter run. Meads would also place seventh in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.23 seconds.
Ke’von Lumb reached the finals of the 100 meter dash and placed sixth overall with a time of 12.25 seconds.
In the 1500 meter run, Karen Escobedo came in fifth, running a time of 5:06.57, while Smith placed eighth in a time of 5:22.08.
The Lady Bears 4X100 meter relay team of Brittany Meads, Daijah Davis-Hines, Ke’von Lumb and Kevena Jones finished in fourth with a time of 47.60 seconds.
When it comes to field events at Morgan State, Jailah Mason has been the talk of the town the past year and a half. And the question that Morgan State track fans are asking is: ‘where is Jailah Mason?’ The sophomore standout from Sterling Heights, Mich., who this season set the school and Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) record in the high jump (6’01.25”) during the indoor season at the MEAC Indoor Championships, while finishing seventh at the NCAA Indoor championships to earn All-American honors, has yet to compete in any of the team’s six meets this outdoor season.
Despite the absence of Mason, the Morgan State field events squad still claimed four top-10 finishes on the day.
Lumb led the way with her third-place finish in the long jump with a leap of 5.69 meters. Jasmyn Hall came in fifth in the shot put with a toss of 12.12 meters, while Favour Ihekweme had a throw of 11.22 meters to finish sixth in the shot put. Nikelene McLean rounded out the day with her eighth-place finish in the javelin throw with a mark of 24.82m.
The Lady Bears will now get ready to host the 13th annual Legacy Track Meet. The meet returns to Hughes Stadium on Friday, April 22nd and concludes on Saturday, April 23rd at Hughes Stadium.
Last year the University of Maryland captured the women’s title, while Hampton won the men’s title. The Lady Bears, who had captured back-to-back meet titles in 2013 and 2014, finished sixth, while the Bears placed fourth.
This year’s Legacy Meet will honor the MSU track and field classes of 1981-85. The meet gets underway on Friday at noon with the decathlon and heptathlon along with the men’s and women’s javelin and hammer throw. The running events get started around 3 p.m. with the women’s and men’s steeplechase.
Day 2 gets underway on Saturday with the conclusion of the decathlon and heptathlon at 9:30 a.m., followed by the start of the rest of the field events at 10 a.m. with the discus, high jump, pole vault, long jump, shot put and triple jump.
The first running event of the day begins at 10 a.m. with the women’s 400 hurdles. Morgan State will also hold its senior day ceremony on Saturday (April 23) at 2:20 p.m.

UMES Enjoys Several Successes at Separate Meets
HAMPTON, Va. — As the outdoor track & field season begins to reach its climax the Maryland Eastern Shore team traveled to the Hampton Roads area, where they competed in two separate meets. The track runners enjoyed some successes at the Hampton Relays while the field athletes set new standards for themselves at the New Captains Classic in Newport News.
At the Captains meet, hosted by Christopher Newport University, the Lady Hawk throwers enjoyed a great day. Sophomore Regyn Davis-Young set collegiate bests in three different events, winning the shot put with a distance of 13.22 meters and setting new high marks in the discus throw (35.70 meters) and the hammer throw (35.17 meters).
Senior Donisha Porter also set a collegiate best with her throws of 37.96 meters in the discus and 38.24 meters in the hammer, while sophomore Nicovia Carter earned a runner up spot in the shot put with a toss of 13.06 meters.
The men’s team also excelled in the throws as each athlete earned a new collegiate best in a variety of events. Senior Rico Duncan finished third in the discus with a throw of 43.36 meters in the discus, while also securing a fifth place finish in the hammer throw for his toss of 44.72 meters.
Freshman Juwan Richardson hit a new high mark with a 34.23 meter throw in the discus and classmate Reginald Young earned a collegiate best in the javelin throw at 39.78 meters. Sophomore Brandon Carter did a little better than Young with a sixth place finish of 41.42 meters, again a collegiate best. Carter also captured a top five finish in the long jump.
While the throwers were enjoying the fruits of their labor in Newport News, the track team held its own in the next town over at the Hampton Relays, starting with a trio of Hawks who won their events. Junior Shuantel Lucius took the top spot in the triple jump at a distance of 12.17 meters, and fellow junior Shelasia Leitch won both the 100 meter hurdle preliminary and final events, topping out at a time of 13.97 seconds. A third junior, Khalil Rmidi Kinini took first in the men’s 1500 meter, running the event at 3:59.83.
Five more athletes also earned collegiate bests at the event. Freshman Jalen Walker ran the 400 meter dash in 49.90 seconds and freshmen Donovan Mundy and Michael Rollins ran the 800 run with times of 1:54.22 and 1:56.50, respectively. But junior Mark Blackmon topped both Mundy and Rollins with his time of 1:53.71 in his 800 debut. On the ladies side, freshman Alicia Colson set a new collegiate best with her time of 25.48 seconds in the 200 meter dash.
Other top performers include sophomore Tanise Edwards taking third in the triple jump and a fifth place time of 57.31 seconds in the 400 meter by junior Rachel Halmon.
The men’s team got a runner up performance by sophomore Oussama Chouati who finished right behind Rmidi Kinini in the 1500 with a time of 4:01.74, as well as a fourth place finish from freshman Jordan Leon. Junior Taj Showalter qualified for the 110 meter hurdles with a third place time of 14.94 seconds. Showalter would ultimately take fifth in the finals.
Maryland Eastern Shore will take on a pair of meets as well, with some members of the team traveling to Morgan State for the Morgan Legacy while others will head to the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville. Both meets are scheduled for Saturday.

Hornets Complete Hampton Relays Over the Weekend
HAMPTON, Va. – The Delaware State track & field program continued its outdoor portion of 2015-16 with the completion of the Hampton Relays over the weekend.
For the women, Rayana Relerford finished second in the 400-Meter Dash with a time of 56.65, while Falesesha Dowe placed fourth (57.09) in the same event. In relay action, the team of Lauren Wood, Raquel Hughes, Tiffany Woods, and Loren Harris crossed the finish line second in the 4x200-Meter Relay with a time of 1:44.35.
On the men’s side, the team of David Morant, Joquan Porter, Julius Allen, and Kiyair Lambert placed ninth in the 4x100-Meter Relay (45.50). Also, a relay team of Morant, Allen, Elijah Agwu, Krystofer Ringgold finished fifth (1:37.30) in the 4x200-Meter Relay.
Coming up, the Hornets will return to action this weekend to compete in the Morgan State Legacy (April 22-23) in Baltimore, Md.
