UMES Men win Don Webster Invitational; women take fourth

BALTIMORE, Md. – The weather may have been cold in Baltimore Friday, but the Maryland Eastern Shore track & field team was red hot. The men’s team won while the women finished fourth at the Don Webster Invitational hosted by Coppin State University.

The Hawks earned 83 points on the men’s side, besting second place Bowie State by three points while the Lady Hawks scored 70.5 points to earn their fourth place standing.

Four Hawks won their respective events, including a player who made his collegiate debut on the track. Junior Mark Blackmon —an athlete familiar to the basketball hardwood at Maryland Eastern Shore—ran in the 5000 meter and won the event with a time of 15:36.32. Blackmon was a superior interscholastic runner in North Carolina.

Sophomore Stanley Meli won the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:07.95 and junior Rachel Halmon won the 1500 meter at a clip of 5:00.97. In the field events, sophomore Nicovia Carter won the shot put with a distance of 13.35 meters. The mark served as a collegiate best for Carter.

Sophomore Janice Lane took fourth in the women’s 1500 meter run (5:05.25) to score five points for the Lady Hawks, and a quarter of players earned four points for a fifth place finish. Fellow sophomore Donovan Mundy took fifth in the men’s 1500 meter run (4:05.25), freshman Juwan Richardson in the shot put (12.92 meters), senior Jheniel Kelly in the women’s 1500 meter run (5:10.74) and freshman Alicia Colson in the 400 meter dash (58.56 seconds).

The Hawks will return to their track next weekend for the Hampton Relays in Virginia.

SSU Record 10 Top-10 Finishes at Aggie Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Savannah State men’s and women’s track and field teams recorded 10 top-10 finishes at the Aggie Invitational Saturday with two on the men’s track team, three on the men’s field team, two on the women’s team and four on the women’s field team.

On the men’s track side, Kevin Todd Woodring finished fourth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.23, while Morgan Ellis-Foster finished third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.11.

The Tigers recorded three top-five finishes on the men’s field team with Malik Franklin’s fourth place finish in the long jump with a jump of 6.39 meters (20-11.75), Connor Christian’s second place finish in the shot put with a distance of 14.64 meters (48-0.5) and Derrick Akins’ fourth place finish in the discus with a distance of 40.72 meters (133-7).

On the women’s track side, Asia Stinson finished fourth in the 100-meter finals with a time of 12.06 after finishing eighth in the preliminary round with a time of 12.27, while Savannah State’s 4x100-meter team of Stinson, Kiana Robinson, Jahmee Reeves and Tyneshia Quarterman finished fourth with a time of 47.98.

The Lady Tigers recorded four top-five finishes on the field side with Kourtney Sizemore’s fifth place finish in the pole vault with a distance of 2.91 meters (9-6.5), Miara Elmore’s fifth place finish in the long jump with a jump of 4.98 meters (16-4.25) and Ravyn Mike’s fifth place finish in the triple jump with a jump of 10.48 meters (34-4.75).

The men’s and women’s teams are back in action Wednesday in Greensboro, N.C., for the Aggie Invitational.

NCCU Collects Three Wins, Seven Runner-Up Finishes at Aggie Invitational

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Miaysha Bryant, junior Jaszmine Bowman and junior Christian Obame celebrated event victories among North Carolina Central University’s 16 top-five finishes, including seven runner-up performances, at the Aggie Invitational, hosted by North Carolina A&T State University on Saturday.

Bryant won the women’s 200-meter dash for the second straight week, this time clocking in at 25.37 seconds to top a field of 32 sprinters.

Bowman captured her first career outdoor win in the shot put with a toss of 11.80 meters on her first attempt of the day. During her three-year NCCU career, she has won two indoor shot put events and an outdoor victory in the discus throw.

Obame won the men’s discus throw with a distance of 42.72 meters, his best effort of the outdoor season.

Finishing just out of first place, runner-up performances were posted by Zoe Ellis in both the women’s long jump (5.30m) and triple jump (11.60m), Deontae Williams in the men’s 200m dash with a career-best time of 21.81, Deandre James in the men’s 800m run (1:57.18), Armond Shaw in the men’s high jump (1.95m), the women’s 4x100m relay squad of Markiara Staten, Bethany White, Christa Landy and Santese Pryor (47.16), and the men’s 4x100m relay foursome of Joshua McClam, Deontae Williams, Jonathan Williams and Isaac Roberts (41.82).

Other top-five performers for NCCU were Staten in the women’s 100m dash (3rd, 11.98), Landy in the women’s 200m dash (4th, 25.77), Jaleesa Smoot in the women’s 400m dash (3rd, 59.60), Carlton Edwards, Jr. in the men’s 400m hurdles (4th, 56.06), Timothy Edelen in the men’s javelin throw (4th, 47.29m), and Obame in the men’s shot put (5th, 13.74m).

NCCU returns to competition on April 15-16 at the Hampton University Relays.

Lady Pirates Win Don Webster Invitational

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University women’s track & field team won the team title at the Don Webster Invitational hosted by Coppin State University on Friday.

The Lady Pirates racked up 107.5 points, 16.5 points more than second-place Bowie State.

Their performance in the jumping events was a major reason for the team’s success; sophomore Jayme Thomas won both the long jump and the triple jump, while freshman Kaitlin Scott – the reigning MEAC Women’s Field Athlete of the Week – won the high jump.

Thomas jumped a season-best 5.76 meters (18 feet, 10.75 inches) to win the long jump, and she leaped 11.67 meters (38 feet, 3.5 inches) to take the triple jump.

Scott won the high jump for the second straight week, leaping 1.55 meters (five feet, one inch).

Freshman Sydney Davis tied for second in the high jump at 1.50 meters (four feet, 11 inches), and freshman Hayley Lofton was second in the triple jump with a mark of 11.00 meters (36 feet, 1.25 inches).

Redshirt-freshman Pollyanna Velasco was second in the 1,500-meter run after turning in a time of 5:02.32, and freshman Crystal Eley was second in the 400-meter hurdles with a 1:06.43.

Graduate student Siobhan Ford-Holland was third in both the 100- and 200-meter dash, turning in a 12.24 in the former and a 25.89 in the latter.

The Pirates were seventh in the men’s team standings with 33.5 points.

Freshmen Jerrick Powell and Tayvon Burris each turned in runner-up finishes in their respective events; Powell came in second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.77, while Burris ran a 49.61 to come in second in the 400-meter dash.

Powell was also seventh in the long jump at 6.39 meters (20 feet, 11.75 inches).

Sophomore Stanley Davis came in sixth in the 1,500-meter run, turning in a season-best 4:07.17.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will be at Armstrong Stadium on Saturday for the Hampton Relays.

Multiple Hornets Shine in Coppin State’s Don Webster Invitational

BALTIMORE, Md. – This past Friday, the Delaware State track & field program participated in Coppin State’s Don Webster Invitational, as the women finished fifth (59 points) and men placed eighth (29 points).

Leading the way for the women, Tremeceia Sample, Roselyn Oroyemi, Fanta Ba and Raquel Hughes finished second (49.62) in the 4x100-Meter Relay. Faleesha Dowe also turned in her best performance of the outdoor season with a second place finish (58.19) in the 400-Meter Dash. In the case of Deja Johnson, she finished third (1:06.73) in the 400-Meter Hurdles. For Omella Gordon, she placed third (2:22.00), followed by Rayana Releford finishing fourth (2:23.61) in the 800-Meter run.

In field action, Ba placed fourth in the Triple Jump (10.43m), while Victoria Wilson finished fifth in the Shot Put (10.58m).

For the men, the 4x400-Meter Relay team of Kiyair Lambert, Jonathan Jones, Emanuel Hitch and Andrew Chambers took home the crown, crossing the line at 3:25.45. Also, Jones won the 400-Meter Dash with a personal best time of 49.48. Lambert, meanwhile, finished third (15.24) in the 110-Meter Hurdles.

Coming up, the Hornets will return to action on Wednesday, April 20 to host the DSU Twilight.
