UMES Women Take Second; Rmidi Kinini nears own record at Navy

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — The Lady Hawks track & field team achieved numerous first place finishes while the men’s team set new precedents with several collegiate bests at the Navy Spring Invitational, played in Annapolis on Saturday. The men’s meet was not affected by team scoring, but the women took second place out of four teams.

Perhaps the best all-around performance came from sophomore Loundy Desire. The sprinter set a new collegiate best in a 100 meter dash victory time of 12.07 seconds, and then followed that with wins in the 200 meter (24.86 seconds) and the 4x100 relay (47.48 seconds).

Sophomore teammates Tanise Edwards and Dypna Umunawke and freshman Luan Gabriel also assisted in the relay victory.

Freshman Alicia Colson set a new collegiate best in a 400 meter dash win, finishing with a time of 56.51 seconds, as did classmate Lenneisha Gilbert who ran a 2:20.49 in the 800 meter run. Junior Jennaya Hield ran a 4:47.73 in the 1500 meter run, a new high for her as a Maryland Eastern Shore runner.

The Lady Hawks also claimed a victory in the 4x400 relay, with a team of junior Rachel Halmon, Gilbert, Colson and Umunakwe registering a time of 3:53.78.

In the field, juniors Shauntel Lucius and Shelasia Leitch went one-two in the long jump. Lucius won the event with a distance of 5.36 meters and Leitch came in second at 5.26 meters. In the throwing events, sophomore Nicovia Carter set a new collegiate high of 36.76 meters in the discus throw.

As a team the women collected 139 points, finishing second behind Navy and ahead of Delaware and McDaniel.

On the men’s side the Hawks competed in their first ever 10k event. Junior Khalil Rmidi Kinini won the event with a time of 31:37.65, making that time the de facto Hawks record. Fellow junior Oussama Choauti came in second (31:46.63), followed by sophomore Stanley Meli in third, and juniors Nassor Whitehead and Derrick Cheruiyot in fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the dashes, freshman Jero Sneh set new collegiate highs in the 100 meter dash (11.46 seconds) and the 200 meter dash (23.43 seconds). Fellow freshman Michael Rollins reached a new collegiate best in the 800 meter run (1:57.90) and classmate Jordan Leon raced in his first 5k since the cross country season and did not disappoint with a time of 15:13.82, coming in third.

Along with his 10k run, Rmidi Kinini narrowly missed the school record in the 1500 meter run, coming in second with a time of 3:52.95.

Junior Naje Benton won the long jump with a distance of 7.35 meters and freshman throwers Juwan Richardson and Reginald Young set new collegiate highs in their events. Richardson hit new heights in the discus and shot put, while Young made new marks in the discus.

The Hawks are currently scheduled to head back to North Carolina for the VertKlasse Meeting at High Point University this weekend.
