SSU's Christian Sets Shot Put School Record at Winthrop Invitational
ROCK HILL, S.C. – For the second straight meet, Connor Christian of the men’s track and field team at Savannah State University broke the school record in the shot put at the Adidas Winthrop University Invitational Saturday.
Christian finished seventh in the shot put with a distance of 15.01 meters (49-3) breaking his previous record of 14.80 meters (49-6.75) set last weekend at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
The Tigers recorded six track top-10 finishes. Justin Leggett finished ninth in the preliminary round with a time of 10.65 in the 100-meter dash, but finished fifth in the final round with a time of 11.01, while Antwuan Poole finished 10th with a time of 10.94 in the preliminary round and finished sixth in the final round with a time of 11.17.
Leggett finished fifth in the 200-meter dash preliminary round with a time of 22.18 and finished sixth in the final round with a time of 23.24, while Kevin Todd Woodring finished eighth in the 400-meter dash preliminary round with a time of 48.63 and finished seventh in the final round with a time of 48.23.
Morgan Ellis-Foster finished ninth in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.18 and finished fifth in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 54.54, while Savannah State’s 4x400-meter relay team finished second with a time of 3:13.44.
The Tigers recorded two additional top-10 finishes on the field side with Dolphurs Hayes finishing eighth in the pole vault with a distance of 4.25 meters (13-11.25) and Derrick Akins finishing ninth in the discus throw with a throw of 43.79 meters (143-8.25).
The Lady Tigers recorded four top-10 finishes on the track side. Asia Stinson finished fourth in the 100-meter dash preliminary round with a time of 11.88 and finished fourth in the final round with a time of 12.22, while Jahmee Reeves finished 10th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.23 in the preliminary round and finished fifth in the final round with a time of 56.02.
Savannah State’s 4x100-meter relay team finished fifth with a time of 47.65, while the 4x400-meter relay team finished seventh with a time of 3:58.01.
Other men’s track results include, Poole’s 14th place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.69, Brandon Davis’ 11th place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.02 and Michael Smith’s 21st place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:00.13.
Other men’s field results include, Christian’s 13th place finish in the discus throw with a throw of 41.61 meters (136-6.5).
Other women’s track results include, Tyneshia Quarterman’s 13th place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.60 and Kiana Robinson’s 15th finish with a time of 25.66.
The women’s field results include, Miara Elmore’s 16th place finish in the long jump with a jump of 4.93 meters (16-2.25), Alysia Potts’ 18th place finish in the pole vault with a distance of 2.90 meters (9-6.25) and Kourtney Sizemore’s 20th place finish with a distance of 2.75 meters (9-0.25).
The men’s and women’s track and field teams are back in action Wednesday for the SSU Twilight at Theodore A. Wright Stadium for the last home meet of the season.

NCCU Collects Seven Top-10 Performances at Raleigh Relays
RALEIGH, N.C. – Zoe Ellis and Bethany White highlighted seven top-10 performances by North Carolina Central University men’s and women’s track and field teams at a packed Raleigh Relays field on Friday and Saturday, March 25-26.
The 2016 edition of the prestigious Raleigh Relays attracted more than 2,000 individual entries with 100 schools represented, so a spot in the top-10 was a coveted accomplishment.
Ellis, a junior out of Charlotte, North Carolina, placed fourth in the women’s triple jump with a measurement of 12.16 meters. She finished behind jumpers from Brown, Connecticut and N.C. State, but ahead of 36 other competitors.
White, a freshman from Gaithersburg, Maryland, recorded a season-best time of 11.83 seconds in the preliminaries of the women’s 100-meter dash to qualify for the finals. She posted a mark of 12.00 seconds in the 100m finals to finish in sixth place.
Also in the women’s 100m dash, NCCU sophomore Markiara Staten placed 10th with a time of 11.87 seconds.
The NCCU women’s 4x400m relay squad of Christa Landy, Kiana Seabrook, Santese Pryor and Jaleesa Smoot placed seventh with a time of 3:48.59.
The NCCU men’s 4x100m relay team of Joshua McClam, Deontae Williams, Jonathan Williams and Isaac Roberts finished in 41.10 to place eighth.
McClam also earned a top-10 spot in the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.03m to place ninth.
Another ninth-place performance for the Eagles was recorded by Mykol Branch in the men’s high jump with a height of 1.90m.
NCCU returns to action on April 1-2 at the High Point University Vertklasse Meeting.
