NEW ORLEANS – Hampton University seniors Ce’aira Brown and Trey Holloway were officially named First Team All-Americans by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), which released its All-America teams on Monday.
Brown and Holloway both advanced to the finals in their respective events this past weekend at the NCAA Division I Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala. Brown advanced in the women’s 800-meter run, while Holloway advanced in the men’s 60-meter hurdles.
Brown finished seventh in her final with a time of 2:06.87 – after she broke her own school record with a 2:04.72 in Friday’s preliminary heats.
Holloway ran a 7.75 in Friday’s preliminary heats to advance, but false-started in the final.
“It’s a great accomplishment for both of them,” Director of Track & Field Maurice Pierce said, “especially Ce’aira, this her first time being named First Team. It’s great for the program, and if you look at the history of this program, and the fact that we keep producing All-Americans, that says a lot.”
Brown was a Second Team All-American in the indoor 800-meter run last season, and in the 2015 outdoor campaign, she was again a Second Team honoree.
Holloway earned First Team All-America honors in the indoor 60-meter hurdles for the second straight year, and he has been recognized by the USTFCCCA every indoor and outdoor season dating back to the 2013 indoor campaign.
He was a First Team All-American in 2014 in the outdoor 110-meter dash, and last season he earned Second Team honors in that event.
During Pierce’s tenure at Hampton, both as head women’s track & field coach and now as the Director of Track & Field, Hampton has seen a combined 29 All-American (plus 15 more student-athletes who were named Honorable Mention).
The Lady Pirates have 19 All-Americans during that span, while the Pirates have 10.
All event finalists from the NCAA Indoor Championships this past weekend were named First Team All-Americans; all other student-athletes who competed at the NCAAs were named Second Team.
