Leitch Secures Road To Headline Track Success in Boston

BOSTON, Mass. — Over the course of two meets in Beantown this past weekend, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) enjoyed many successes. But perhaps none were better than junior Shelasia Leitch breaking the women’s 60 meter hurdles record at the Scarlet & White Invitational on Saturday. Her effort capped off several first place finishes by the Hawks, leading to a solid finish at both Boston’s Scarlet & White and Harvard’s Crimson Elite.

Leitch raced to a time of 8.57 seconds in the finals at Boston University, ultimately finishing in third place. However, that tops Shavon Robinson’s time of 8.63 seconds back in 2005 to set the new school standard.

Overall as a team the men’s team totaled 52 points to finish fifth at Harvard and 22 in Boston to take 10th. The ladies finished slightly ahead in the standings at each meet, taking fourth with 29 points at the Crimson Elite and ninth with 33 points at the Scarlet & White.

On Friday, many of those who competed scored points, and a good number of those came in the mile run, which the Hawks swept. Junior Khalil Rmidi Kinini won the race with a time of 4:15.63, and was followed by freshman Oussama Chouati, sophomore Stanley Meli and junior Nassor Whitehead.

In other events at the Crimson Elite, junior Taj Showalter earned a new season high in the hurdles with a fourth place finish and a time of 8.25 seconds. Junior jumper Naje Benton took third in the triple jump with a distance of 14.20 meters and senior thrower Rico Duncan took points in both in the shot put and the weight throw. Duncan’s distance of 18.39 meters serves as a new collegiate high for him, and earned him a second place finish.

For the ladies, a sizable portion of the points came in the 400 meter dash. Sophomore Dypna Umunakwe took the runner up spot with a time of 58.15 seconds, and freshman Lenneisha Gilbert came in fourth exactly one second behind her teammate. Freshmen Alicia Colson (Upper Marlboro, Maryland) and Luan Gabriel also earned points in the event.

Out in the field, junior Shauntel Lucius earned a runner up position in the triple jump with a distance of 12.07 meters, and sophomore teammate Tanise Edwards also earned points with a sixth place finish. Senior Donisha Porter took seventh in the shot put to earn a pair of points for her team.

At Saturday’s Scarlet & White meet, points were harder to come by for the men, as Rmidi Kinini, Benton, and Duncan were the only three scorers, although graduate assistant coach Aaron Chatmon finished second in the 400 meter dash as an unattached runner.

There were, however, a few athletes who reached new heights as Hawks. Freshman Jalen Walker ran a 22.28 second 200 meter for a new collegiate high, and sophomore Donovan Mundy topped out at 1:55.86 in the 800 meter run for a new UMES high. Chouati’s time of 4:15.55 in the mile (his second runner up performance of the weekend) also serves as a new collegiate high.

The Lady Hawks got a point from Gilbert’s time of 57.03 seconds in the 400 meter dash, which also serves as a college best for the freshman. Junior Jennaya Hield earned her team three points with a sixth place finish in the 800 meters, and both Lucius and Edwards delivered a big contribution with a first and second place distance, respectively, in the triple jump. Edwards topped her college best with a new longest distance of 11.96 meters.

In the throws, Porter picked up where she left off the day before, coming in sixth with a throw of 12.96 meters in the shot put. Hawks sophomore Regyn Davis-Young joined her in the point scoring, setting a new standard for her with a 12.81 meter throw.

UMES hopes the momentum continues, because the team will compete in the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Indoor Track & Field Championships beginning Thursday in Landover, Maryland.
