LANDOVER, Md. -- The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) completed day one of the Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.
On the women's side, Hampton leads the field after two events and heads into the second day, with 27 points. Florida A&M is second after recording 20 points and Coppin State is third with 14 points during the first day of competition.
Florida A&M’s Cynthia Chelelgo captured gold in the 5,000m run with a time of 17:40.03. FAMU teammate Judith Kibii finished second with a time of 17:51.36 and Hampton’s Kaylor Murray was third with a time of 18:16.81.
Coppin State’s Kierston Bond won the long jump with a leap of 5.77m (18-11.25 ft.). Siobhan Ford-Holland of Hampton finished second at 5.62m (18-05.25 ft.) and North Carolina Central’s Zoe Ellis was third at 5.60m (18-04.50 ft.).
On the men’s side, Maryland Eastern Shore recorded 28 points through two events scored. Bethune-Cookman, the defending MEAC Indoor Champions, is second with 21 points, followed by North Carolina A&T State in third with 18 points.
UMES’ Khalil Rmidi Kinini, the 2014 and 2015 MEAC Cross Country Outstanding Performer, won the 5,000m run with a time of 15:08.95. UMES teammate Oussama Chouati finished second with a time of 15:13.21 and North Carolina A&T State’s Darren White placed third with a time of 15:15.78.
In the long jump, Bethune-Cookman’s Kenneth Fisher captured the gold with a 7.80m (25-07.25 ft.) jump. Naje Benton of Maryland Eastern Shore placed second at 7.49m (24-07.00 ft.), while Frank Quarles, of North Carolina A&T State, finished third at 7.43m (24-4.50 ft.).
Kevin Francis of North Carolina A&T State leads after four events in the men’s heptathlon with 2,747 points. Christian Kinney of Hampton currently sits in second with 2,736 points, while Hampton’s Jerrick Powell is third with 2,734 points. The men's heptathlon will conclude tomorrow with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m.
The championships continue Friday, February 12, with the men's heptathlon starting at 9 a.m. Other field events on Friday's slate includes the women's pentathlon, men's and women's high jump, and men's and women's weight throw. The student-athletes return to the track to compete in the semifinals of the men's and women's 60m hurdles, 60m dash and 400m dash. The day closes out with the men's and women's distance medleys.
The competition concludes on Saturday, beginning at 9:30 a.m., with the women's shot put, men's and women's pole vault, and the men's and women's triple jump. Running events begin at 1 p.m. with the women's mile run. Rounding out the afternoon's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 3:25 p.m.
