B-CU's Fisher qualifies for NCAA Championships in long jump

JACKSONVILLE – Bethune-Cookman’s trio of 100 meter dash runners lived to run another day while Kenneth Fisher leaped his way to a second NCAA Championships appearance at Thursday’s NCAA East Preliminary at UNF’s Hodges Stadium.

Fisher’s sixth place in the long jump earned the sophomore a return trip to Eugene, Oregon for the NCAA meet June 10-13 while Tristie Johnson, Angelo Cabrera and Kareem Fair advanced to the quarterfinals of the 100 meter dash.

Fisher was on the bubble after his first attempt – a 24’ 3 ¾ that left him in the 12th and final qualifying spot. His second leap (25’1¾) matched his season best and all but assured him of a spot at the national meet.

Cabrera and Fair advanced to Friday’s quarterfinals by finishing 10th and 14th, respectively in the 100 meters with times of 10.37 and 10.44.

Johnson entered the meet seeded fifth, but struggled in a heat she ran of 11.63 (Kentucky’s Dezerea Bryant had the day’s best time at 11.15) but still was among the top 24 qualifies at 20th.

In addition to Johnson, Cabrera and Fair in the 100 meter, Friday will see Ed’Ricus Williams compete in the high jump and Malik Lewis in the 110 hurdles. Fair and Johnson will pull double duty in the 200.
