GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Bethune-Cookman Lady Wildcats and the North Carolina A&T State Aggies sit at the top of the leaderboard heading into the final day of competition in the 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.
On the women's side through six events, Bethune-Cookman leads the field with 38.33 points. Morgan State is close behind in second with 38 points and Florida A&M is in third with 33 points.
Bethune-Cookman senior Deidra Jordan won events in the high jump, long jump and 200m to capture gold in the women’s heptathlon with 4,778 points. Howard’s Hanah Billups placed second (4,371), while Savannah State’s Jaymi White finished third (4,345).
Morgan State’s Ke’Von Lumb finished first in the long jump, with a leap of 5.72m (18-09.25 ft.), and MSU teammate Jess St. John secured the top spot in the women’s shot put, with a throw of 14.96m (49-01.00 ft.).
In men's action, the Aggies advance to the final day with 52 points. Defending MEAC champion Bethune-Cookman currently sits in second with 47 points, followed by Maryland Eastern Shore with 46.50 points.
North Carolina A&T State’s Todd Townsend won events in the 100m, 400m, 110m hurdles, pole vault and javelin to claim the top spot in the decathlon with 6,433 total points. Hampton’s Emmanuel Price finished second with 6,180 points, and Pirates’ teammate Christian Kinney placed third with 5,905 points.
Dillon Simon of Maryland Eastern Shore won the men’s shot put with a top throw of 17.60m (57-09.00 ft.). Hampton’s Sulaiman Fared placed second at 16.14m and FAMU’s Dennis McGee finished third at 15.28m.
NCAT’s Frank Quarles earned gold in the men’s long jump with a mark of 7.44m (24-05.00 ft.). Kenneth Fisher of B-CU finished second at 7.38 and South Carolina State’s Demek Kemp placed third, with a jump of 7.17m.
The competition concludes Saturday, with events scheduled to start at 9 a.m. with field events including: men's and women's pole vault, javelin, and triple jump. The women's and men's 4x100m relays will begin the running finals at 1 p.m. Rounding out the evening's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 4:20 p.m.
