ROCK HILL, S.C. – The South Carolina State men’s outdoor track and field team finished in second place at the 2015 Carolina’s Cup hosted by Winthrop University on Wednesday at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Complex.
The Bulldogs scored a total of 107 points and got four first-place finishes at the meet. Jarad Jeter won the 400 meters in 47.84 seconds, while Jeffrey Jones won the 200 in 21.40. The 4x100 team of Bryson Brown, Christopher Gaddist, Jones and Demek Kemp took the title in 41.57 and Chris Bonner won the high jump after clearing 1.90 meters.
Jones also ran the 100, finishing second in 10.66. Brandon Lowery (400 meters; 48.99), Gaddist (400-meter hurdles; 52.99), and Dwight Rogers (high jump; 1.85 meters) all came in second in their individual events.
Moses Kennedy (14.47), Rogers (15.86) and Gaddist (15.94) finished third, sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 110-meter hurdles.
Brown jumped 6.30 meters to place third in the long jump, while Rogers (4th; 42.63 meters) and Matthias Williams (5th; 38.41 meters) were the Bulldogs’ top finishers in the javelin throw.
Joseph Brevard was sixth in the triple jump (12.01 meters) and Roderick Britt placed sixth in the discus (39.63 meters).
On the women's side, South Carolina State scored 115 points to finish third at the 2015 Carolina’s Cup hosted by Winthrop University on Wednesday at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Complex.
The ladies had a successful outing, recording six first-place finishes and several top-five finishes. The Lady Bulldogs got wins from Nikkia Jefferson in the 100-meter hurdles (14.17 seconds), Karissa Bertling in the 200 meters (24.55) and 400 meters (55.91), Antavia Owens in the 100 meters (11.62), Deja Jackson in the shot put (13.62 meters) and from the 4x100 relay team of Bertling, Keziah Brown, Owens and Tahje Whittley (47.43).
Jefferson (40-meter hurdles; 1:04.13), Owens (200 meters; 24.86), Tenisha Stanley (100-meter hurdles; 14.30) and Biqualia Scott (Javelin throw; 29.93 meters) each had second-place finishes in their individual events.
Celeste Taylor was third in the shot put (12.14 meters), while Payton Ashe finished third in the 400 meters (58.23) and seventh in the 200 meters (25.59).
In the field events, Shamyia Darby (28.28 meters) and Patrice High (22.62 meters) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the javelin. Jacoy Hutto cleared 1.43 meters to finish seventh in the high jump and Jackson (36.32 meters) and Scott (36.28 meters) were seventh and eighth, respectively, in the discus.
Both teams are off until next Thursday when they go to Greensboro, N.C. to compete in the 2015 MEAC Outdoor Championships which will be held April 30 – May 2 at North Carolina A&T State University.
