Hampton men win Morgan State Legacy meet

BALTIMORE, Md. – The Hampton University men’s track & field team was strong in all facets on Friday and Saturday at Hughes Stadium, using that well-rounded effort to win the team title at the Morgan State Legacy Meet.

The Pirates finished with 85 points, edging Howard by one point.

The Pirates had five second-place finishes for the weekend, including a season-best 52.82 from Stanley Davis in the 400-meter hurdles and a 14.26 from Trey Holloway in the 110-meter hurdles.

Emmanuel Price racked up 5,981 points in finishing second in the men’s decathlon, while Donmanique Hardy was third with 5,976 points and Christian Faber-Kinney was fourth with 5,656 points.

Holloway led the Pirates’ 4x100-meter relay team – along with Chidi Okezie, Treyshante Ashby-Phan, and Jasper Savoy – that came in second with a 41.12.

Okezie was also on the 4x400-meter relay team – along with Justin Beatty, Edose Ibadin, and Rayon Black – that finished second after running a season-best 3:09.59.

Isaac Arriola was fourth in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 14.44 meters (47 feet, 4.5 inches). Mohamed Labor-Koroma was fifth in the pole vault with a mark of 3.87 meters (12 feet, 8.75 inches).

The Lady Pirates were fourth in the women’s team standings with 62 points, while Maryland took the team title.

Tanisha Greene, Le’Quisha Parker, Ce’aira Brown, and Malekah Holland teamed up for Hampton’s lone event title of the weekend, winning the 4x400-meter relay with a 3:40.50.

Greene and Parker were also on the 4x100-meter relay squad, along with Kristan Young and Meshala Morton, that came in second with a 46.23.

Kourtney Keller ran a season-best 1:00.93 to finish second in the 400-meter hurdles.

Brown ran a season-best 4:33.23 to finish third in the 1,500-meter run, while Kayla Key (Pittsburgh, Pa.) was fourth in the javelin with a mark of 36.56 meters (119 feet, 11 inches).

Holland was fifth in the 200-meter dash with a 24.77.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will be in Philadelphia, Pa. this Thursday through Saturday for the historic Penn Relays.

Personal bests achieved, top tens common for UMES

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.  and BALTIMORE, Md.— While two Hawk track & field performers were busy shattering the record books against top flite competition, there were plenty of others who soared to new heights as well. Personal bests were achieved in the Virginia Challenge, which was not affected by team scoring, while many other Hawks scored top ten finishes at the Morgan Legacy. In the Baltimore meet, the men’s team finished 8th while the women’s team placed 11th.

At the Virginia Challenge, two Lady Hawks knocked down their personal best times in their premier events. Sophomore Rachel Halmon speed to a 2:11.26 finish, a time over a full second better than her best collegiate time, either indoor or outdoor. Another sophomore Shelasia Leitch pushed past two previous highs—a personal best 14.25 second time in the 100 meter hurdles and an outdoor field best mark of 5.73 meters in the long jump.

The men’s distance runners highlighted a bevy of top ten finishes by the Hawks. Freshman Stanley Meli took the highest place, a runner-up spot in the 5000 meter run. Meli also took home a tenth place finish in the 1500 meter run. Fellow freshman Nelson Kimutai ran in the 5000 meter run as well, finishing seventh, while leading the way in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a fourth place finish. Three other Hawks—sophomores Nassor Whitehead and Derrick Cheruiyot and junior Mark Tuwei finished fifth thru seventh, respectively, behind Kimutai.

Other top ten finishers for the men included sophomore Sodiq Amusat, who finished sixth in the 800 meter run, and senior Rico Duncan with his third place finish in the shot put. Fellow senior Devin Wynn and sophomore Naje Benton took home top tens in the triple jump, with Wynn finishing third and Benton finishing sixth.

On the Lady Hawks’ side, freshmen Loundy Desire and Royce Aiken both reached the 100 meter finals, with Aiken achieving a personal best time of 12.30 seconds. A third freshman, Aliah Cherry also reached a personal best time of 59.76 seconds in the 400 meter dash, and a fourth, Janice Lane, took a top ten placement in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:15.51, good for eighth place.

In a distance race, sophomore Barbora Blahutova finished seventh in the 1500 meter run, with a time of 4:42.44. Blahutova was even more exceptional in the 3000 meter steeplechase, with a runner up time of 11:08.99.

Out in the field was freshman Tanise Edwards, who scored a top ten finish in the high jump, and sophomore Shauntel Lucius and her outdoor best 5.39 meters in the long jump. Edwards would go on to also finish 10th in the triple jump. In the shot put, two Hawks—freshman Nicovia Carter and sophomore Alexis Daley finished seventh and tenth, respectively, as Carter threw for a personal best 13.07 meters. Sophomore Donisha Porter finished ninth in the discus as well with a toss of 37.50 meters.

The Hawks will now focus their attention to the Penn Relay Carnival, beginning on Thursday and ending on Saturday.

Dennis Pugh Grabs Two Top 10s At Georgia Tech Invitational

ATLANTA, Ga. Dennis Pugh scored two Top Ten finishes to lead the FAMU Men’s Track contingent at the Georgia Tech Invitational at George C. Griffin Track Friday and Saturday.

Pugh, a native of St. Petersburg, Florida, stood out in the hurdles, getting fourth in the 400 intermediate hurdles (51.95) and sixth in the 110 hurdles (14.45).

Olivier McDaniel ran sixth in the 400 hurldes (52.98); Wells Jeudi was sixth in the triple jump (14.47m), while Isaiah Smith ran seventh in the 400 meters.

FAMU will be in Gainesville Saturday, April 25 for the Tom Jones Invitational at the University of Florida.

 

Lady Rattlers Snare Dozen Top 10 Finishes At Auburn

AUBURN, Ala. – The FAMU Women’s Track team turned in a fine performance this past weekend at the War Eagle Invitational hosted by Auburn University, in their final event before the 2015 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships, April 30 through May 2.

Leading the way for the FAMU ladies was Andrea Aaron, who scored a third in the shot put (12.77m) and sixth in the discus throw (42.31m).

The FAMU distance aces dominated the 3000 meter steeplechase, as five Lady Rattlers finished in the top eight:  3-Judith Kibii, 11:18.68; 4-Effiey Kosgei, 11:19.18; 6-Fridah Limo, 11:53.33; 7-Cynthia Chelelgo, 12:16.90; and 8-Phyllis Cheruiyot, 13:32.98.

FAMU’s relays teams also finished strong with the 4x100 getting third in 45.94, while the 4x400 crew ran fourth in 3:54.44.

Destiny Johnson recorded a fourth in the 800 meters; Jasmine Smith finished sixth in the 200 (24.31) ahead of Jharna Alston, who got seventh (24.38).

Alston ran fifth in the 400 meters (56.27); Ashley Giacomucci was seventh in the 400 hurdles, while Ashley Ivey ran eighth in the 100 hurdles (14.53).

Women Finish 10th, Men Place 14th in Morgan State Legacy Meet Over Weekend

BALTIMORE, Md. – Inching closer to the MEAC Outdoor Championships, which is slated to begin April 30 in Greensboro, N.C., the Delaware State track & field program took part in the Morgan State Legacy event this past weekend with the women tallying 23 points to finish 10th out of 19 squads, while the men came in 14th (8 points) out of 21 teams.

In the 400-Meter Dash on the women’s side, Omealla Gordon crossed the finish line at 55.01 to place second, whereas Rayanna Relerford placed in the top 10 with a time of 56.67 to finish eighth.  Gordon and Relerford, meanwhile, teamed up with Sabrina Burrell and Ke’Shaun Davis to finish fifth (3:48.90) in the 4x400-Meter Relay event.  Shalaya Sidney, on the other hand, tallied 3939 points to register a third place finish in the Heptathlon event to round out the notable performances for the Hornet women.

On the men’s side, Charles Wulff-Cochrane finished fifth (53.45) in the 400-Meter Hurdles, as he also teamed up with Bryan Pointer, Sharad Mackey and Alpha Mansaray to place fifth in the 4x400-Meter Relay with a time of 3:18.75.

Delaware State will head to Philadelphia, Pa. for the Penn Relays later this week, running Thursday through Saturday.
