Jumpers & Throwers Have Field Day at Mason Spring Invite
FAIRFAX, Va. - Saturday's Mason Spring Invitational in Northern Virginia brought home several strong finishes for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore track and field team. This was especially true for the men's and women's field teams, who earned three wins and numerous top ten finishes. The one-day meet was not affected by team scoring.
The men's side was the more dominant of the two, as sophomore Naje Benton along with seniors Devin Wynn and Dillon Simon each recorded victories in their respective events. Benton beat the field of 30 competitors in the long jump with a distance of 7.11 meters, despite it being the first time he has participated in the event for the outdoor season.
On the women's side the Lady Hawks had plenty of impressive finishes themselves. Sophomore Shauntel Lucius reached a new height with her 12.23 meter distance in the triple jump, good for third place. In the shot put, sophomore Alexis Daley and freshman Nicovia Carter were neck and neck, ultimately finishing eighth and ninth, respectively, with throws of 12.47 meters by Daley and 12.46 by Carter.
A pair of challenging meets awaits the Hawks prior to the MEAC Championships in early May. They will head to the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville next weekend before heading to the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia a week later.
