Savannah State Track and Field Sets New Records At UNF Invite

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.  – Several members of the Savannah State men’s outdoor track and field team set new personal best records at the University of North Florida Spring Invitational this weekend, in Jacksonville, Florida.

SSU freshman Corey Jones won the 800 meter run with a new personal best time of 1:54.90. In the 400m dash, newcomer Elijah West set a new personal best of 51.96.

On the women’s side, Asea Gilmore got within 44ths of a second of the school record in the 400m hurdles. Gilmore finished 5th with a time of 2:16.44. Anntiontte Elam set the school record with a 2:16.00 in 2004.

In the field, White finished 8th in the long jump with a distance of 5.56m. Mia McLean recorded a distance of 4.53m in the same event. In the triple jump Elmore recorded a 10.98m for 10th place, and Mclean finished in 12th with a 10.84m. Kortney Sizemore and Alysia Potts each recorded a distance of 2.90m in the pole vault competition.

Savannah State continues the outdoor season with the final home meet. The Tigers will host the Savannah State Twilight on April 1 at T.A. Wright Stadium. The first event is set to kick-off at 4 p.m. The meet is free and open to the public.

Three Lady Hawks relay teams finish in top five

RALEIGH, N.C. & ANNAPOLIS, Md. —  
The University of Maryland Eastern Shore track & field team split its squad between the Raleigh Relays and Navy Invitational, producing results in both meets. There were several top finishes, especially in the relay races, in a Raleigh match not affected by team scoring. Meanwhile, the Hawks finished third at the Navy Invite with 28 points.

The highlight of the Hawks was the trios of the Lady Hawks’ relay teams, all of whom ran in North Carolina. In the 4x400 relay the team of freshman Dypna Umunakwe, senior Shantol Hemley, junior Jheniel Kelly and freshman Luan Gabriel finished fifth with a time of 3:51.98.

For the men’s team, sophomore Taj Showalter qualified for the 60 meter hurdles finals, ultimately finishing fifth with a time of 14.69 seconds. Freshman Oussama Chouati took eighth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:11.98m and senior Dillon Simon took home another first place finish in the shot put with a throw of 18.33 meters.

At Navy, the Hawks were paced by sophomore Kevin Stanford who gave the team ten of its 28 points with two second place finishes. He registered a 1.89 meter high jump and a 12.32 meter triple jump, scoring five points in each finish. Fellow sophomore Sodiq Amusat also brought home a second place finish with a time of 50.96 seconds in the 400 meter dash.

The season continues for the Hawks next weekend at the Vertklasse Meeting in High Point, North Carolina.

Holloway Wins Hurdle Title at Raleigh Relays 

RALEIGH, N.C. – Hampton University junior Trey Holloway, fresh off his All-American performance a few weeks ago, won the 110-meter hurdles title at the Raleigh Relays this past Friday and Saturday at the Paul Derr Track.

Holloway turned in a 13.93 to take gold.

It was one of three event titles on the weekend for the Pirates and Lady Pirates; sophomore Rayon Black also took gold in the men’s 400-meter dash after running a 47.76.

On the women’s side, freshman Meshala Morton, junior Tanisha Greene, senior Le’Quisha Parker, and junior Ce’aira Brown won the sprint medley with a time of 3:58.08.

The Pirates and Lady Pirates will compete in a pair of meets this coming weekend, running in both the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. and the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Va.
