Simon Excels Among Plethora of Top Five Finishes at Wake Forest

GREENSBORO, N.C. — The University of Maryland Eastern Shore track team got off to a great start at the Wake Forest Open in North Carolina over the weekend. In a meet not affected by team scoring, many Hawks brought home top five finishes, but one UMES athlete eclipsed them all.

While Simon served as the high point of the meet for UMES, plenty of others also stepped up in the first outdoor session of the year. Freshman Dypna Umunakwe  impressed with a fourth place finish in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.67 seconds. In the 400 meter and 800 meter runs, senior Shantol Hemley reached new heights with a 56.02 second, runner-up performance in the 400 meter and a fifth place personal best time of 2:11.68 in the 800.

Finally, just like the Lady Hawks, the men’s 4x400 relay team also posted a top five finish, taking third in the race with a time of 3:17.05.

The track team hopes to continue its strong start next weekend with the Raleigh Relays, hosted by North Carolina State University. The meet will begin Friday at 9:30 a.m., picking up at 10:00 a.m. Saturday
