SAVANNAH, Ga. – Savannah State men’s and women’s track and field opened the 2015 outdoor season with a stellar showing at the SSU Eyeopener on Saturday at T.A. Wright Stadium.
SSU men’s outdoor track and field picked up five first place finishes, while the Lady Tigers garnered 11 top ten finishes.
Leading the Lady Tigers on the track was a newcomer and returner. Georgia Southern transfer, and SSU newcomer, Asea Gilmore who ran a 2:21.15 in the 800 meter run for a first place finish, while senior Jaymi White won the 100m hurdles with a time of 15.64.
In the 400m hurdles, Miara Elmore ran a 1:12.14 to finish in second place. In the 100m hurdles, Desiree Allen finished in 8th place with a time of 17.90.
On the field, Kortney Sizemore won the pole vault competition with a jump of 2.80m. Newcomer Ravyn Mike won the long jump with a distance of 5.36m. In the high jump, White finished second with a distance of 1.42m. Ravyn finished fifth in the same event with a distance of 1.32m.
White topped the long jump event with a distance of 5.11m and a second place finish. Elmore trailed White with a distance of 4.95m and a fourth place finish. Elmore also finished second in the triple jump with a distance of 10.79m.
The Tigers were highly successful in the field events on Saturday as a few newcomers propelled them to several first place finishes.
Malik Franklin won the long jump with a distance of 7.10m. Donterious Copeland finished seventh in the same event with a distance of 6.25m.
Copeland won the triple jump with a distance of 12.82m. Dual sport athlete Connor Christian (also an SSU football player) finished second in the shot put with a throw of 13.01m.
Derrick Akins won the discus throw with a distance of 43.20m. Christian followed Akins in the same event, finishing in seventh with a throw of 31.76m.
On the track, the Tigers were led by a handful of top finishers. Sophomore Justin Leggett won the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.24, and senior Cameron Hall won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 14.61.
Lemaar Shakir finished second in the 110m hurdles with a time of 15.13. Brandon Davis finished in eighth in the same event with a time of 16.53. Johvonte Singelton followed Davis with a time of 18.42.
Shakir finished second in the 400m hurdles with a time of 54.40, followed by Brandon Davis in third with a time of 55.22.
Leggett finished second in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.38. Antwuan Poole topped the 400 meter dash with a time of 50.39 and a third place finish. Copeland followed Poole with a time of 51.37 and a sixth place finish.
Corey Jones finished at the top of the 800m run with a time of 2:00.83, and a fourth place finish. Jones finished fifth in the 1500m run with a time of 4:12.82.
Savannah State continues the 2015 outdoor track and field season with two more home meets. They host the Savannah State Relays on March 1, and the Tiger Orange and Blue on March 6.
