MEAC COMPLETES DAY ONE OF INDOOR TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

LANDOVER, Md. -- The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) completed day one of the Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex in Landover, Md.

On the women's side, Florida A&M and Morgan State are tied for the lead, heading into the second day, with 14 points. Bethune-Cookman and North Carolina Central recorded 10 points each and are tied for third during the first day of competition.

Florida A&M’s Judith Kibii captured gold in the 5,000m run with a time of 17:49.51. Ishakeema Swain of Morgan State finished second with a time of 17:55.56 and Maryland Eastern Shore’s Barbora Blahutova was third with a time of 18:14.95.

North Carolina Central’s Darlene Girardeau won the long jump with a leap of 5.80m (19-00.50 ft.). Imani McGhee of North Carolina A&T State finished second at 5.70m (18-08.50 ft.) and Bethune-Cookman’s Deidra Jordan was third at 5.64m (18-05.75 ft.).

On the men’s side, Maryland Eastern Shore recorded 30 points through two events scored. North Carolina A&T State is second with 23 points, followed by Bethune-Cookman and Hampton in third with seven points.

UMES’ Khalil Rmidi Kinini, the 2014 MEAC Cross Country Outstanding Performer, won the 5,000m run with a time of 15:29.46. Darren White of North Carolina A&T State finished second with a time of 15:30.65 and Maryland Eastern Shore’s Ossama Chouati placed third with a time of 15:30.77.

In the long jump, North Carolina A&T State’s Frank Quarles captured the gold with a 7.59m (24-11.00 ft.) jump. Jared Kerr of Maryland Eastern Shore placed second at 7.57m (24-10.00 ft.), while Demek Kemp, of South Carolina State, finished third at 7.48m (24-06.50 ft.).

Hampton’s Emmanuel Price leads after four events in the men’s heptathlon with 2,920 points. Keron Stoute of Bethune-Cookman currently sits in second with 2,840 points, while Hampton’s Christian Kinney is third with 2,812 points. The men's heptathlon will conclude tomorrow with the 60m hurdles, pole vault and 1,000m.

The championships continue Friday, February 13, with the men's heptathlon starting at 9 a.m. Other field events on Friday's slate includes the women's pentathlon, men's and women's high jump, and men's and women's weight throw. The student-athletes return to the track to compete in the semifinals of the men's and women's 60m hurdles, 60m dash and 400m dash. The day closes out with the men's and women's distance medleys.

The competition concludes on Saturday, beginning at 9:30 a.m., with the women's shot put, men's and women's pole vault, and the men's and women's triple jump. Running events begin at 1 p.m. with the women's mile run.  Rounding out the afternoon's events will be the men's and women's 4x400m relay race at 3:25 p.m.
