PRINCESS ANNE, Md. — There were many successes for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore track team as they hosted the Coach O Invitational, but perhaps the most impressive feat was reserved for Hawk sophomore Khalil Rmidi Kinini, who set the school record for the mile run during the meet.
Rmidi Kinini posted a time of 4:13.04, good for a first place finish in the event. The time beat a three year old record set by Mustapha Habbani back in 2011 by a full three seconds. Furthermore, this is the second school record the sophomore has set this year, after resetting the 3000 meter run back in December.
Many other Hawks had impressive days as well. Freshman Royce Aiken and sophomore Evelyn Chappell each qualified for the 60 meter dash finals, with Aiken placing third in the final race. In the 200 meter dash freshman Dypna Umunakwe took first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.85 seconds, and in the 800 meter run sophomore Rachel Halmon also claimed victory with her two minute and 15 second performance. Fellow sophomore Shelasia Leitch won the 60 meter hurdles and the 4x400 relay team won as well with a time of 4:00.77.
In the field events, Chappell captured the high jump crown with a 1.65 meter jump and freshman Tanise Edwards took the triple jump crown with her jumps totaling 11.54 meters. Sophomore Alexis Dailey won the weight throw for the second meet in a row with a toss of 15.44 meters.
On the men’s side senior Hakeem Harris reached the finals in the 60 meter dash, ultimately placing in fifth. Sophomore Taj Showalter took home the 400 meter race with a time of 51.09 seconds, and freshman Nelson Kimutai won the 3000 meter run with a time of 9:09.54. Showalter and sophomore Orwell Maylor each qualified for the 60 meter hurdle finals, with Showalter claiming second and Maylor coming in fifth.
Senior Devin Wynn finished first in the triple jump with a distance of 14.50 meters and fellow senior Rico Duncan won both the shot put and weight throw with distances of 14.15 meters and 15.47 meters, respectively.
The meet was not affected by team scoring. Both teams will return to the Naval Academy later this week for two more invites, separated by gender. On Thursday the women will travel to Annapolis, and the men will compete on Saturday.
