CSU men earn pair of wins at Tiger Open

PRINCETON, N.J. – Fueled by a pair of season-best efforts from Michael James and Shane Green, the Coppin State men’s track and field team had a strong afternoon at the Tiger Open at Princeton University’s Jadwin Gym Saturday.

James sailed to victory in the 400-meter dash in a season-best time of 50.05 seconds. Green had an active day for the Eagles, finishing second in the long jump (7.01 meters/23 feet) and triple jump (15.12m/49-7.25). This is the second straight week Green has produced a season-best effort in the triple jump, which is a sign that the reigning MEAC TJ champion is rounding into shape to defend his title at next month’s championship meet.

Jeremey Dorsey was busy as usual for Coppin State, finishing second in the 200-meter dash (22.40) and fifth in the 60-meter dash (6.99). Alaric Coker was third in the 800-meter run (1:56.33) and a member of the 4 x 400-meter relay team that was second (3:24.88). Also part of the 4 x 400-relay team was Mark London, Kerrone White and Delroy Davis.

Rohan Stewart was third in the 400-meter run (50.30). Other top eight finishers for Coppin State included Devin James (fifth, long jump), London (seventh, 800), Fabian Hayles (eighth, 800) and Kester Chase (seventh, 200).

Coppin State returns to action when it competes in the two-day Penn State Invitational beginning Friday night.

CSU’s Caddle-Hope wins pair of events at Ursinus Collegiate Invitational

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – Melissa Caddle-Hope was a double event winner for the Coppin State women’s track and field team at the Ursinus Collegeville Invitational Friday night at the Floy Bakes Fieldhouse.

Caddle-Hope’s effort helped Coppin State score 100 points, which was the most of any school at the meet. The Eagles were one of four Division I teams that competed along with Saint Joseph’s, Delaware State and George Washington during the meet featuring many Division III schools.

Caddle-Hope won the 60-meter dash (7.88 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (25.46) to lead the Eagles. Tanaya Yarde also won the 400-meter dash (59.27) and was second in the 200 (25.51) for Coppin State. The Eagles scored 47 of their points in the 60 and 200-meter dashes Friday night.

The following athletes were second in their respective events: Randi Bohler (60-meter hurdles), Danielle Baker (long jump), Miriam Ekwuru (400-meter dash) and Kadeem Curtis (800 in a personal best time of 2 minutes, 26.73 seconds). Bohler was also third in the long jump. Meanwhile, Alexis Marsh finished third in the 200 and fourth in the 60-meter dash.

The Eagles return to action this weekend as some women compete at Penn State on Friday and Saturday while others will participate in a meet at George Mason on Saturday.

Four wins among 17 top-3 performers for NCCU at UNCG Spartan Team Challenge

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – North Carolina Central University’s indoor track and field teams achieved 17 top-3 performances, including four event victories, during the UNCG Spartan Team Challenge on Sunday (Jan. 25).

Among the NCCU winners were sophomore Darlene Girardeau in the women’s 60-meter dash (7.73 seconds), junior Christa Landy in the women’s 400m dash (59.16), sophomore Carlton Edwards, Jr. in the men’s 400m dash (50.80), and sophomore Jaszmine Bowman in the women’s shot put (11.75m).

The other top-3 performers for NCCU were Jaelyn Rice in the women’s 60m hurdles (3rd, 9.44), Isis Pinkney in the women’s 60m dash (2nd, 7.89), Jonathan Williams in the men’s 60m dash (3rd, 6.94), Santese Pryor in the women’s 400m dash (2nd, 59.59) and the 200m dash (2nd, 25.99), Kevin Vincent in the men’s 400m dash (2nd, 51.00), Amber Brooks in the women’s 800m run (3rd, 2:19.07), Deandre James in the men’s 800m run (3rd, 1:56.22), Deontae Williams in the men’s 200m dash (3rd, 22.49), Sasha Morphis in the women’s shot put (2nd, 11.12m), Joshua McClam in the men’s triple jump (2nd, 13.93m), the women’s 4x400m relay (2nd, 4:01.19) and the men’s 4x400m relay (3rd, 3:25.69).

NCCU returns to competition on Jan.30-31 at the Hilton Garden Invitational in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

Savannah State garners multiple top finishes at UNCG Spartan Challenge

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.  – The Savannah State indoor men’s and women’s track and field teams earned 19 top-ten finishes at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro Spartan Team Challenge this past weekend. 

The Tigers led the charge for SSU with 14 top-ten finishes. SSU senior Cameron Hall won the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 8.01, followed closely by teammate Lemaar Shakir in second with a time of 8.25.

The men’s relay team of Shakir, Brandon Davis, Malik Franklin and Donterious Copeland ran a 3:21.77 in the 4x400 for a first place finish.

In the 200 meter dash, Justin Leggett finished in second with at time of 22.48. Leggett earned a fifth place finish in the 60 meter dash with a time of 6.99.

Davis and Shakir finished near the top of the 400 meter dash. Davis ran a 51.02 for third place, while Shakir followed with a 51.39 in fourth place. Franklin ran a 52.09 in the same event, finishing in sixth.

Franklin led the Tigers in the field, winning the triple jump event with a distance of 14.44m. Copeland finished fourth in the same event with a distance of 13.53.

Christian Conner – who is also a defensive lineman for SSU football - had a throw of 13.43m in the shot put, to finish in second place. Derrick Akins finished fourth in the weight throw with a distance of 12.53m. In the pole vault, Dolphurs Hayes cleared 4.40m for a fourth place finish.

SSU newcomer Asea Gilmore led the Lady Tigers with a second place finish in the 800 meter run, registering a time of 2:19.07.

In the field, Alysia Potts finished with a distance of 2.75m for fifth place in the pole vault. Kortney Sizemore finished behind Potts with a 2.75m jump as well.

Mia McLean finished in sixth place in the triple jump with a distance of 11.03m, followed by Miara Elmore in eighth with a jump of 10.73m.

Joining the women’s track & field squad this semester are several SSU volleyball players. Autumn Sessions finished 10th in the shot put with a throw of 7.28m, followed by Lynae Brant (6.88m) in 11th, and Zariya Thomas (6.79m) in 12th place.

Savannah State continues the indoor track & field season on Feb. 7 at the University of South Carolina Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
