CSU's Daniel advances to 400 semifinals

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Coppin State sophomore Rosen Daniel advanced to the semifinals in the 400-meter dash during the opening day of the NCAA Division I East Region Preliminary Championships at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida Thursday night.

Daniel will try to become a qualifier for the NCAA Championship meet in Eugene, Oregon in two weeks when he takes the track tomorrow night at 6 p.m. He finished third in his heat and 19th overall in a time of 46.78 seconds. Finishing ahead of Daniel in his heat were the two athletes who posted the fastest times of the 400: Florida State’s James Harris (45.58) and Florida’s Najee Glass (45.58).

Meanwhile, sophomore Donell Taylor finished sixth in his heat and 30th overall with a time of 47.17 seconds. Only the top 24 finishers advanced to Friday’s semifinals. Taylor will still be busy as he will run in the 4x400-meter relay on Saturday night at 9:45 p.m. Junior Shane Green also finished 34th in the long jump with a mark of 7.08 meters (23 feet, 2.75 inches).

Green will compete in the triple jump at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. In each of his last two trips to Florida, he has soared at least 50 feet in the triple jump. Also on the women’s side Deandra Daniel will participate in the high jump also starting at 5:00 p.m.

UMES’ Evans advances at NCAA Preliminaries

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The fabulous senior campaign for Gayon Evans continued yesterday at the first round of the NCAA preliminaries in Jacksonville, as she earned qualification to the semifinal round of the women’s 100 meter dash.

Evans placed 11th in the field of 48 people with a time of 11.66 seconds. Running in the fourth heat on Thursday, Gayon finished second in an eight person race. Athletes who finished in the top half of the field advanced to the semifinals, which are Friday evening at approx. 6:15. Evans will also run in the 200 meter dash preliminaries a couple hours after her semifinal run.

Other Hawks who competed on Thursday include freshman Jared Kerr finished 32nd in the long jump with a leap of 7.09 meters. Junior Dillon Simon competed in the shot put with a toss of 17.28 meters for a 34th place finish. Senior Aaron Chatmon finished 41st in the 400 meter dash with a time of 47.65 seconds, and freshman Orwell Maylor took 43rd in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 53.55 seconds.

In addition to Evans racing twice on Friday, senior Javon Spencer will also compete in the men’s 200 meter dash preliminaries. He qualified with a 42nd place ranking and will compete in Heat 5. Results can be followed on flashresults.com in real time.

Wulff-Cochrane Completes Season with Top 25 Finish

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Competing against some of the nation’s best during Thursday’s NCAA East Preliminary Round, hosted by North Florida, sophomore Charles Wulff-Cochrane crossed the finish line at 52.15 to place 25th out of 47 runners in the 400-Meter Hurdles Preliminary event.

With this performance, he surpassed his qualifying time of 52.23, which occurred in the MEAC Championships earlier this month.

Throughout his sophomore campaign, Wulff-Cochrane garnered six top-five finishes in the 400-Meter Hurdles, including placing first at the Delaware State Invitational (53.50) and Delaware Outdoor Open (53.40).  Additionally, he had a leg in five top-five 4x400-Meter Relay squads this season for the Hornets.
