Coppin State qualifies seven student-athletes for the NCAA Track and Field Championships
BALTIMORE -- Coppin State had two women and five men qualify for the 2014 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championships at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville on May 29-31.
On the women’s side senior Christina Epps (triple jump) and sophomore Deandra Daniel (high jump) qualified. Meanwhile on the men’s side junior Shane Green (long and triple jump) along with sophomores Donell Taylor (400-meter dash, 4 x 400-meter relay), sophomore Rosen Daniel (400m, 4x400 relay), sophomore Alaric Coker (4x400 relay) and Kester Chase (4x400 relay) earned the trip to regionals.
Making her third appearance at the NCAA East Regionals and first since 2012, Epps has enjoyed an amazing year. She is currently 10th in the triple jump with an effort of 13.12 meters (43 feet, .50 inches) accomplished last weekend at the ECAC/IC4A Championships. Epps has won the triple jump at the MEAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships. She also earned All-American honors during the indoor season by finishing seventh at the NCAA Championships.
Daniel won the high jump at both the MEAC Indoor and Outdoor Championships for the second straight year. She set the school record with a clearance of 1.83 meters (six feet) at the Morgan State Legacy Meet on April 18. She ranks eighth in the East Region in the high jump.
The events for both women will begin at 5 p.m. on different days. Daniel will compete in the high jump on Friday, May 30 and Epps will begin her competition on Saturday, May 31.
Green and Rosen Daniel advanced to the preliminary championships for the second consecutive year in their respective events. Daniel is currently ranked 16th in the 400-meter dash with a top time of 46.38 seconds, achieved during last weekend’s ECAC/IC4A Championship meet. Taylor’s top mark of 47.03 seconds is 32nd best in the event. That mark was accomplished last week at the ECAC/IC4A Championships.
Green qualified in the triple jump after breaking the school record in the event with a jump of 50 feet, 8.25 inches at the Florida Relays. He is ranked 22nd in the East Region and won the event at the MEAC Indoor Championships. He finished third in the event at the MEAC Outdoor Championships.
The 4x400 relay team is 24th in event with a mark of 3:08.96 also achieved during last weekend’s ECAC/IC4A Championship. The quartet earned All-MEAC honors after finishing second at the Outdoor Championship meet earlier this month.
Taylor and Daniel will compete in the 400-meter dash on Thursday, May 29 at 7:20 p.m., while Green will compete in the long jump on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. He will participate in the triple jump on Friday, May 30 at 5 p.m. The Eagles 4x400 relay team will hit the track on Saturday, May 31 at 9:25 p.m.
The top 12 finishers in each event will advance on to the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships on June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.

Savannah State Track & Field Qualifies Four For NCAA Preliminaries
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Four Savannah State outdoor track and field student-athletes have qualified for the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Preliminary Championship per an announcement by an NCAA Committee Thursday afternoon.
The SSU track and field program has qualified members for the NCAA Preliminaries every year since the school elevated to NCAA Division I (2002-03).
Representing the Tigers in the 100 meter dash will be sophomore Kenshard Hamilton. Hamilton qualified for the Preliminaries with a time of 10.43, set at the 2014 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Outdoor Championship.
In the 110 meter hurdles, junior Cameron Hall will run for the Tigers, after qualifying with a 13.96, also set at the MEAC Championship. Junior Lemaar Shakir will run in the 400 meter hurdles after running a 51.59 at the MEAC Championship to qualify.
For the Lady Tigers, Asia Stinson will run in the 100 meter dash. Stinson set the school record (11.60) in the event at the 2014 MEAC Outdoor Championship.
The NCAA Preliminary Championship is divided into East and West Regions. The Tigers, in the East region, will run at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida May 29-31 for a chance to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship held June 11-14 in Eugene, Oregon.
The top 48 student-athletes in the individual competitions were accepted into the NCAA Preliminaries.
